Question - The bum in the park.

What sparks the bum's anger after Douglas gives him one of his briefcases?
Never made much sense to me. His "plan" as he vocalizes was to sell the briefcase and eat for a week (?) with the money, yet he turns angry when discovering the briefcase only includes.....D-fens lunch. Still Looks like a perfectly good briefcase to me...

Thoughts?

I think he was hoping there would be more things of value in it (which I think is why he wanted it in the first place)

Pretty ungrateful if you ask me.

I never understood that. Most briefcases are full of documents and things of little to zero value to anyone but the owner. What a stupid bum.

Awesome answer.

The bum was expecting to find some valuables inside that he could pawn. It went to show the homeless man's sense of entitlement - a decent briefcase by itself wasn't good enough for him, he wanted more.

reply

It happened to be a time-traveling briefcase, which the bum used to become Del Varner.

@Lester_Burnham_Risen Yes, I too saw him giving away his briefcase as a symbol of him leaving his old life behind. He had changed his self-image.

reply

he was mad because bill was not dumb enough to fall for his lies. the bum was thinking that briefcase had money in it

Rob Zombie is one of the greatest movie directors today

I've seen real life bums get violent when people offer to buy them food...They don't want the food, they want the $$$ for drugs.

He was hoping more was inside the brief case.

You've been hanging out with the wrong bums. The ones I give food to are always grateful. AT least half of them wolf it down right in front of me before the light even turns green.

I have a feeling HiFiAudioGuy has never spoken to a bum, or is mistaking a low life for a bum. I give food to bums all the time and they are not only grateful, but very nice people. Most of them seem to have some sort of medical problem that would make employment damn near impossible and since unpaid medical bills are the #1 form of bankruptcy in america, it often makes me wonder how many are destitute due to being ill.

...and one of my favorite parts is Douglas' reaction to the bum's anger...watch for it and check out his little smirk as he kicks the apple. That must have been improv'd.

I've seen it too. My old boss was approached by a homeless woman, who I knew took $ people gave her and hit the liquor store, but my boss being nice and all told the woman to come with us, when we got to a restuarant, my boss offered to buy the woman anything on the menu.

The woman realizing she wasn't getting any $$, cussed and threatened my boss to the point police were called....

Yeah, but it's a dry heat... PFC. Hudson

None of that has got anything to do with what was in the movie. If any of you had actually known homeless people, you would have noticed the bum first got indignant when Bill wouldn't give him a thing, even ten cents. It was only later, when he was offered the briefcase, that his expectations rose. When he was offered nothing at all he was frustrated because his ability as a professional beggar was being insulted. I've seen it in real life.

Maybe but it really wasn't about the bum. It was a technique used to entertain the audience. At the time we didn't know he had been walking around with an empty briefcase. We don't imagine anyone would do something that illogical - bordering on crazy. When it's revealed to us, the surprise factor needed to be increased for the entertainment value of the reveal. That's the main reason the bum was angry, to draw our attention even further to the surprise with his unpleasant emotion.

The rest of the bum's character/motivation was filled in after the fact, and isn't all that important.

Assuming that you're not talking about a fast food restaurant, there would still be an opportunity to booze up. She couldn't read the wine list or something?

Well what are the use of my brains if I'm tied up with a dumb cluck like you?

reply

The best part of the movie is when the bum threw the apple at Bill

Maybe he took her to Whammy Burger.

To me, I think it's more that he just wanted something from him. He saw him in the park during the day with a nice outfit, and assumed he'd be some rich guy, so he wanted something from the rich guy because, obviously, it'd be very valuable.
