It's been 20 years! Where is Jason Scott Lee??

Why has this guy disappeared and not done anything major?

reply

I think Soldier was the last big movie he had a major role in which is a shame. I think he's a good actor.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

LOL..never heard of it. Don't think he'll get a role as big as the Dragon.

reply

Yeah probably not.

He did "Hawaii Five O" not too long ago

It's still very hard for an Oriental actor to break out, especially a man.

reply

Also, dude, "Oriental" is not the preferred nomanclature.

Not your call.

reply

"Asian-American. Please"

reply

It's not 1978 or 1985 bro, nobody says "Oriental" anymore to refer to someone from the Far East. Asian is the preferred choice of word.

reply

Oriental is more accurate. Even Bruce Lee said Oriental. Asian can mean Indian, Paki, Iranian, Saudi, Sri Lankan, etc.

reply

Oriental can also mean Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, etc. But Oriental is considered an offensive term. Bruce Lee used the term in like 1966 or 1972. The term became offensive to use by the early or mid 80s. Since the late 80s, "Asian" is the choice word in North America to describe those from the Far East.

Yes it can technically encompass people from South Asia too, i.e. India and Sri Lanka, but it's overall better to use then calling someone Oriental. It's like calling someone who's of African heritage "colored" instead of "black" or "African American".

"Colored", along with "Oriental" just sounds so 1950s/1960s in how dated it is. People don't want to be called terms by what the ruling white majority used to refer to groups. Again this isn't the 1950s or 1970s anymore.

reply

I don't see how Oriental can mean people from India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. They are Asians, but not Orientals.

Very good question. Unfortunately the answer is that he is Asian. Most scripts in Hollywood are looking for a Brad Pitt, George Clooney, or Denzel Washington. His talent is not in question. He is a fantastic actor, but he is Asian in a business that has a very limited business model sometimes.

reply

That's what I was saying. It's even hard for hot female Orientals like Lucy Liu to get work. She seems to have disappeared as well.

reply

Lucy Liu has been on two hit TV shows since 2011. She doesn't have much time for movies anymore.

Lucy Liu has been on 2 hit shows since 2011?? Like what? I've not seen here anywhere since Charlies Angels.

She's currently on a little show called Elementary on CBS that's on its second or third season. Before that she was on Southland on TNT which was on for about five seasons. If only there was a website to look up this kind of stuff.

I've never heard of any of those shows you mentioned Liu is in. It's clear she hit her peak with Charlies Angels and it has been all downhill since. Same with Jason Scott Lee since he did Dragon.

reply

I'm sure when Lucy Liu cashes her weekly six figure check, it's still unfulfilling because
you've never heard of her show. And I guess somebody's heard of it because it's been on the air for years.

Liu isn't even remotely pretty nor is she a good actress so if she disappears it's not a big loss but she's been around. Jason on the other hand is good looking, his face has character and is a pretty good actor so his failure to make it bigger is disappointing.

reply

Oriental does NOT refer to the Indian subcontinent. It is only east Asia like China, Japan, Korea, etc. It is INSANE to think Oriental is offensive because it simply means EAST! Since when is a direction like north, south, east, or west offensive??

Occidental means west yet that is never considered offensive. This PC crap has gone WAY too far. Sometimes feels like north korea!

About this whole "Oriental" business over "Asian", yeah, that crack about "Asian" being the preferred nomenclature was from The Big Lebowski.

As far as "Oriental" being used over "Asian", I don't see why people either on this message board or in real life are getting bent out of shape about it. When I buy a certain flavor of Ramen noodles in blue packaging, it still says big as life "Oriental Flavor" and has for at least the last 25 years since I've been eating the stuff. So, clearly, people don't have as big a problem with it as you think they do.

I know what you must be thinking, "Oh, but that's on soup! That doesn't count! We're talking about people being called 'Orientals'." It's made by the Japanese in the late 1950's, considered the greatest invention by them in the 20th century, As of 2010, approximately 95 billion servings of instant noodles are eaten worldwide every year. China consumes 42 billion packages of instant noodles per year – 44% of world consumption – Indonesia, 14 billion; Japan, 5.3 billion, Vietnam 4.8 billion, USA 4 billion. Per capita, South Koreans consume the greatest amount of instant noodles, 69 per capita per year.

Yup, I C&P'd that from Wikipedia. So, anyway, some so-called "Asians" must read the flavor on the package if they eat all that Ramen and simply not care or it would be changed if they felt so insulted. Once more, if 4 billion packages are eaten here in the United States, where we claim to be so politically correct and uber-sensitive to everyone's feelings, they must also see this on the packages and also brush it off. Thinking "If the 'Asians' don't care to re-name it, neither do we."

Oriental itself means of or from "East Asia", so what's the big deal? It's not derogatory in my eyes. If anything, it's more specific than just lumping everyone in together as "Asian". It's not *beep* *beep* or "slant-eyes". Oriental is safe to me until someone hears it and comes to me with a legitimate grievance of 'why not'.

Ignorant much? It does not mean that her carreer has went downhill if you've never heard of what she's been doing. She has been working steadily and her new show, Elemetary, is somewhat a success.

Hollywood has made it clear they're not interested in Asian first run movie stars unless it's a martial arts star. Liu did Charlie's Angels but never anything that big again. Basically Hollywood is 99% white and some blacks due to white guilt. Name a first run movie star that isn't white or black. Hardly any!

I have watched youtube videos about what Lee has been doing. He lives off grid, he bought some land in Hawaii I think and just grows his own food and uses solar energy to power stuff etc etc. Looks like he is in the new Crouching Tiger movie now, but when he doesnt have work he lives off grid. Here are some videos you can see his off grid life:
