And they were both directed by the same guy. The low-budget movie world can be really odd sometimes.
At any rate, I must admit to having a soft spot for this film. I'm a sucker - well, up to a point - for low-budget, studio-bound futuristic environments where any attempt at an organic design is completely thrown out the window. I very much enjoy those artificial lighting schemes, the overly elaborate fighting choreography, etc...
It can be a little too much sometimes what with the ineffective second unit establishing shots and the like, but all in all I think there's quite a bit to enjoy here, from the wonderful music score to some genuinely memorable character layouts (Li, Mustafa, Black Ice, Slick...). And while I may be naive, I always found that to be a truly ingenious twist at the end, leading up to an immensely satisfying character showdown.
