Dirty Weekend query

I read this book a decade or so ago under the US title: The Weekend.
I found a copy with Portuegese subtitles. I was surprised they changed Bella's character from a down on her luck prostitute to a mild mannered career woman, whose boyfriend dumps her for a younger woman, and she takes up residence by the seaside as typist.
Why the chracter change?
