Why does Dennis like Mr. Wilson?

Mr. Wilson is a stereotypical "crotchety old man" and has no obvious qualities that -- to my knowledge -- would lead to a child wanting his company. When I was that age, I'd have found someone with Mr. Wilson's personality quite repellent and wished to avoid his company. But maybe that's just me?

So...what does Dennis see in him? (In this particular movie and/or in the overall franchise.)

Or...maybe we're supposed to have no idea why...

reply

Because Dennis is such a innocent young boy, that he sees good qualities in Mr Wilson, even though they are very "hidden".

....and another thing that helps is that they are next door neighbors.

It's like Therman Merman and Willie in Bad Santa. Therman likes Willie, but Willie is grumpy toward him.
