Taco Bell/Pizza Hut

I live in Australia, and unfortunately had to suffer through the entire Pizza Hut edit fiasco from the DVD release (Although I have travelled to the US since and I bought the proper copy).

Now the Blu Ray is out, does anyone know if the Aus/Euro version is restored to the original film?

reply

Just bought the Australian Blu-ray and watched it tonight. They've left it as Pizza Hut.

What's the deal with that?? I saw it in theaters and have the VHS copy from the the first release. It was always Taco Bell.. which was hilarious by the way.. why did they change it at all???

It had to do with Taco Bell getting sued over their name in Australia in the 80's. The guy who sued (the owner of a restaurant called Taco Bell's Casa) won his case and Taco Bell decided to pull out of Australia completely. So for the Aus movie release they decided to change Taco Bell references to Pizza Hut in order to make it more relatable to locals who may not know what Taco Bell is.

What's kind of funny is a few years after the movie came out, Yum Brands bought both Taco Bell and Pizza Hut..

reply

Yep, that's the story! It's a strange thing to change.

I always wondered if Stallone actually DID the overdubs during the scene, becasue it actually sounds like someone doing a bad impression of him.

Either way, I ordered the US version from Amazon. Now I have the proper film!

Thanks for explaining. I'm just watching the movie for the first time in many years and when they started using the Pizza Hut name I thought "wtf? wasn't it Taco Bell?" Understandably outside the US Pizza Hut is way more of a recognised brand than Taco Bell.

P.S. I remember back (many years) when Taco Bell was pretty much only in southern California (and had pretty decent food unlike the synthetic gluey crap they serve now). Saw one in Germany a few years ago, but yeah it's mostly a US thing.

The strange thing about that is that when the movie was released most European countries if any had Taco Bell and it was left in. People just assumed it was a popular American food chain.

I just saw this on Sky today and it was the Pizza Hut version. When he said it I was like ... "WTF? Pizza Hut?!! Why the hell did they redub it like that?"

Makes no sense at all. And its so glaringly obvious its been changed, even if you didn't know what it was changed from. Taco Bell was way better.

reply

Craig I just came on here to say the same. I just watched it on Sky Movies and I'm sure even they used to show the Taco Bell version.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

reply

They did! They absolutely did! I don't know when they started showing this version instead, but I think its a recent development.

watching it now andits pizza hut version ive seen the taco bell version many times in the uk

The absolute funniest part is that they couldn't/didn't change the print on the windows of the restaurant. They all still say "Taco Bell" with the Special Logo that was created for them. Only in places where they could slap the "white background" Pizza Hut logo on did they change them. Like the sign, the van, the food bottle, etc... ROFL

reply

I think the funniest part is the look on Stalone's face like, "am I suffering cryo-lag or did that guy's lips and voice just say two different things"? Which is exactly what my face did before I rewound it and made sure I wasn't crazy.

At least they changed the Taco Bell sign outside the restaurant to Pizza Hut.

I own a DVD with the Taco Bell version.

Funny thing is, dine in Pizza Huts are now as rare as hens teeth in Australia.

reply

They did in the french version too, funny thing is that they should have changed for Switzerland too as the only fast food chains we have and know of is McDonald's which are around every corner of the streets. I think they bought the exclusive rights to the swiss market or something..

reply

Wait... so your telling me here in Australia if I want the Blu ray region B I would still have to ORDER from the UK which is also region B to get the PROPER Taco BELL version?? or is it ONLY here in Aust we get this dumb Pizza Hut version? or is it UK too??? so I have to buy it from the U.S?? where our dollar is crap right now

got this country is pathetic so behind on everything technology movies and they wonder why we are the highest pirated country in the world. they can't even get a release of a god damm Blu Ray movie in the right dubbing

reply

Watching it now.

They say Taco Bell, but the Closed Captions say Pizza Hut. lol

I had to come here immediately.

reply

I just happened to be watching it for a few minutes with the captioning on and noticed they said Taco Bell, but the CC said Pizza Hut. I had no idea this had even been an issue but I came here to see if anyone else had commented on it. Wow.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

I was wondering about the fact that Taco Bell , KFC, and Pizza Hut are the same company. All owned by Pepsi.

Weird the dialog would be changed. It's an American movie taking place in America, it doesn't have anything to do with Austrailian Doppeganger Taco Bell. The movie deals with censorship, and this is a weird censorship.
