I had never even heard of this movie until yesterday. I was having breakfast with my Dad and several of his WWII Marine buddies, and they were discussing movies. One of them mentions that he was casually browsing through the channels when a tombstone appears on the screen with the 6th Marine Division insignia on it. That being their unit, he decides to watch, and then he proceeds to tell the story of Leonard Fagot, in and out of the USMC. So, yes, it is a true tale, or rather based on a true tale. The Marine said that drugs were involved more than was shown in the movie. Interesting stuff.
BTW, he said he could not find a copy anywhere.
