what is the sickness?

Just watched this and really liked it. At first I thought it was all sickness they were trying to get rid of but now I'm thinking it was AIDS. Can anyone tell me for sure?

I haven't seen this in probly 20 years I was a kid when my then teenage sister was watching this movie. I always believed it to be AIDS..
