Actor portraying Alan Panghorn..........

hmm..why didn't they use the same actor in both the dark half and needful things? alan panghorn is in both books..i don't see why they didn't, it would've connected both movies together, in the way stephen king connected the different events that happened in castle rock. (the dark half and needful things) he was one of the main characters.. ah dont see where im going with this..but just making a little worthless statement, being that i havent watched both movies, but ive read the books, is it really worth watching?

i haven't seen the film version of needful things, and i've not seen the dark half in years, but michael rooker is an incredible actor. i'm surprised he doesn't work more often. if you haven't seen him in henry: portrait of a serial killer, you're missing out on a real treat.

i wish they had used ed harris in this movie, it would've at least made it a little better. michael rooker is a terrible actor ... i swear the man cannot get out of the gruff, "i'm gonna kill you" look. pangborn was a likeable character in the book and rooker was not at all likeable in his adaptation of him.

different movie studios, different directors, different producers, different casting people. the stories themselves may be connected, but the films are not. sure it would have been nice to see either Ed Harris or Michael Rooker play Pangborn in both films, but obviously the director of Needful Things didn't agree and wanted a different actor, or maybe a different look for the character. it's the same thing with Cujo and The Dead Zone, in the films a different actor portrayed Sheriff Bannerman.

It is interesting though, that Ed Harris, who played Pangborn in Needful Things, has worked with George Romero in the past (Knight Riders and Creepshow), and that Harris's real life wife, Amy Madigan, play Thad Beaumont's wife in The Dark Half. My those weird Hollywood connections!

I did think that those connections were interesting. The Dark Half was actually made two years before Needful Things, but wound up sitting on a shelf when Orion Pictures went out of business. So, that probably played a big part in it. Also, I'm not sure if the filmmakers were aware of the literary connection between the two works and even if they did that they would care.
