Just how good is Madonna in this movie??!!

Crappy movie, but I have seen it many times just to re-watch Madonnas performance. All doubters should really watch this.

Madonna is GREAT in this movie, which i think is good too!

I agree. This is Madonna's best role as an actress. I didn't really care too much for the movie.

reply

I agree! *beep* movie but madonna is so convincing. Why doesnt she getter better roles? This movie proves she is more of an actress than people think.
She suprised me anyway.

In this movie Madonna acts well - very well.

I don't think her problem is the roles she get. Ferrara suffered to get a truthful performance out of her, and he hints at his method, for instance, on the scene where Keitel calls her a commercial piece of *beep* Also, her acting is so amazing in Snake Eyes because it isn't always acting — for instance, she probably didn't know she was being filmed in that shot where she is in front of a mirror and a sink.

Check out this interview with Ferrara, if you're interested: http://www.avclub.com/content/node/22601

The Onion: ((her films)) are all pretty terrible, but I remember thinking she fit pretty well into Dangerous Game.
Abel Ferrara: Yeah, that's because she plays an actress who's so bad, the director commits suicide. Who else would be better for the part?

reply

Yeah right, the woman can't act, get over it.
I was a Madonna fan back then and hated this movie a lot!!

reply

The movie is overall not good, but Madonna does more work than anyone else to carry the emotional/moral/spiritual weight of the movie without cracking under that weight. I do not mean this as a joke, and I know it's an oddball comparison to make, but her role and her performance are similar to Schwarzennegger in BATMAN & ROBIN. Two high-profile performers, better known for being stars than for their acting skills, being trapped in the unenviable position of making an otherwise weak movie at least worth sitting through on the chance that there is some reward at the end of 105mins. In the end, I'll agree with most other people on this thread -- if DANGEROUS GAME is worth anyone's time at all, it's because of Madonna.

Anyone who believes Madonna can't act just has to watch this film. Totally incredible and breathtaking performance. The movie is much better on a second viewing by the way

I was blown away when I watched Madonna in this movie. I must agree with the reviewer on the movie's title page (re: she blinks a lot, deadpans etc.). But here: Wow! She takes us deep into the character and into pain. Really good stuff. Not a comfortable viewing, but definitely emotional.

I'm sorry, but you're no Kubrick or Scorsese either, mate. A hit-and-miss director but nothing else than that. For every "Bad Lieutenant" and "Addiction" there is a "Dangerous Game" and "Blackout".

-Goodnight, mother of six!
-Goodnight, father of two!

Her performance demonstrated class, poise and a bucketload of talent. If only more had seen her amazing performance!

Madonna truly rocks in this one.
Too bad the movie bombed. Otherwise she'd have gotten some recognition for it

Madonna's reputation as an actress would be far better if there were more films like Dangerous Game and Evita and fewer ones like Shanghai Surprise and The Next Best Thing.

Madonna is great in this because her acting is so natural and raw. But Madonna didn't like shooting this because she wasn't in control (she hated Ferrara), she didn't like improvising, and she was shot in an unflattering (read: realistic) light. Madonna is more comfortable acting when she knows her lines and her cues. The stiffness that she exudes in her worse movies is the acting style that makes her happy. Strange, because that style makes her look bad. But Madonna doesn't want to improvise or dig deep. She just wants to hit her cue.

reply

I agree tpcorless, although I think she might be more willing now, although she does seem set in her ways.

tpcorless you also hit on something I could never quite convey about her acting, she has a fear, I just watched her in Girl 6 and as natural as she seemed she also looked nervous and uncomfortable.

Madonna always complained that people only saw her in her movies, but that is because that is all she was willing to show.

That is why her performance in this is a revelation, I have seen it only once and I still remember it.

reply

I agree with all of you. And you're right, Flagler, I think in most of her films what we see is a woman battling her overblown self-confidence as well as her insecurities, not an actress. She is typically too stiff (i.e. hitting her marks and cues like a photo model) or too withdrawn (looking down, blinking, like she doesn't want to be there). In this, she essentially plays herself, like she did in "Truth or Dare" and "Desperately Seeking Susan" -- and when Madonna plays herself, she is very engaging. "Evita" was a magnificent music video, and her performance, while cinematic and befitting of the material, was not really acting as much as it was performing (and Madonna is one of the greatest, most energetic, most all-encompassing performers alive).

So - in reality, while I agree she is very good in this film - like she always is when she plays herself - I have to say that this is not the best acting of her career. Not technically. Her supporting role in "A League of Their Own" was the best film acting of her career. It's a shame that Penny Marshall never directed her in anything else.

she's not good at all, she doesnt even react, she sits there sullen and morose and thats about it. Russo and Keitel do all the work

No Justice Just Us

reply

She was as stiff, lifeless and unbelievable in this as she has been in every other film. Only thing she should be cast in is a vampire film... as a wooden stake!!!!

RUSSO and KEITEL POWER. As always, powerhouse performances from both.

reply

Whether she liked the brutality of filming a bio pic or not Madonna has acknowledged that she was good in it in hindsight. What she didn't appreciate was being tricked into believing that the scripted version would be the final version (based on Ferarra's statements everyone apparently knew that during shooting but her) especially since it was her production company that was partially financing the project she went in naturally expecting a greater say in the direction and shape of the final edit. But I agree her style does seem to suit extemporaneous, off the cuff lines, shootage from rehearsals or one take shots with the right material.

reply

OP: Yeah, but it's the only movie in which she's any good as a dramatic actress.
