I am the first to say SWEPT AWAY/THE NEXT BEST THING made me think stick to singing BUT WATCH THIS BARELY RELEASED FILM and she's excellent and it's a tough role. The film is flawed but she IS GOOD.

Madonna stupidly came out against this movie before it was released, shooting herself in the foot

Madonna needs very defined roles for her to be a good actress. That way her strong personality gets muted by the character of who she is playing.
She was fine but the problem was that there was no reason to care about her in the movie. Her character was a skanky obnoxious Hollywood ho. I think we were actually supposed to care about her watching what she has to go through even though we know she's a skanky obnoxious ho, but it's not enough.

Abel's opinion is rather transparant. Madonna & Freddy Demann produced
this film but they gave Abel full creative freedom & final cut. Madonna & Abel didn't get along on the set & she didn't agree with his vision as far as the final resutlt of the 'story' was concerned. Madonna never badmouthed the film as such, but she expressed her 'disagreement'..then the reviews came in and she got better reviews than Abel or the film itself..which pissed Ferrara off.
Now Madonna may be a bitch but Abel Ferrara has quite the reputat,ion himself. His ego was hurt so what else was he to do besides badmouth the the 'Commercial Superstar Whore'. But at the end of the day Madonna is simply brilliant in this.
I saw this movie again recently. Actually Madonna is not that good, she just doesn't suck either. She played in an edgy sex scene that probably got people hot for her.

In 2010 Madonna trashed it as a *beep* movie that I was good in" but I don't even remember how she promoted it or what was said at the time. They both overreacted for various reasons, both personal and career-wise, in the aftermath which is unfortunate considering the mutual admiration that exited prior but Ferrara's tone about the whole affair has been significantly lighter and more muted in the last couple years. Besides being sober and happy, finally, he obviously respects her more as a director than actress. Maybe they will meet up in Rome and work together again in some capacity.
