First truly uncomfortable action film?

Personally I think so. I'm no prude to violence and personally love it when the villains get what's coming to them but there is a line which this film crosses. I'm sorry but no one wants to see their heroes beaten as severely as they are in cliffhanger. It was just too over the top and made the heroes really rather lousy. Yes it does work to make the villains hate able but in the wrong way

It's because of people like you we can't have nice things.

Um.... Right...

Wuss.

A good beat-down is fine, at least Gabe and Hal survive, it's the gunning down of kids and an old man that makes Cliffhanger disturbing.

reply

possibly.. and I always hate seeing those kids, or Frank, gunned down. But at the very end? You are glad the bad guys are DEAD DEAD DEAD> And it ups the stakes for the film in making you take the villains seriously.

reply

Yes omg.. the killing of the adrenaline-junkie kids was so messed up.

reply

You have to wonder if they’re going to keep being mountain rescuers. Sarah’s death already tore them apart, now Frank has been brutally murdered, and seeing their little skydiver buddies riddled with bullets can’t have been fun.

After their ‘adventure’ they’d spend half their time in the cemetery, wracked with trauma and grief.

Perhaps it’s time they moved to the city, or the beach.

reply

I dont think those types would fit in in the city, or the beach.
They'd be itching for the mountains.

reply

That just makes their torment even worse. Every time they try to escape the nightmare of the mountains, they’re drawn back to them. Eventually they might consider suicide.

I’m more hopeful though. Gabe was able to live in Denver for 6 months so I think they can do it. I’d like to see Jessie have a go a beach life too 🤤

reply

Uh you need to understand that the heroes in this movie were not ex-military, they were not cops, they were just regular people. They were a rescue team composed of mountain climbers with little to no fighting experience. Yeah they were strong and they could climb mountains but that doesn't necessarily transfer to expertise in hand to hand combat.

Cliffhanger is not Commando and you need to get over it (although I did like Commando but for different reasons).

Huh? Nothing about this film I found uncomfortable to watch at all. There are countless action films that are much more graphic and violent than this one.

reply

Nah.

It's a movie about a bunch of vicious criminals armed to the teeth who the (largely unarmed) heroes get entangled with, and who the villains have no intention of letting escape alive. What do you expect?

reply

Spoiler alert !!

While I don't like a lot of Stallone's movies, I like Cliffhanger. I don't recall the violence being excessive, but what I did find disturbing is the filmmakers actually let the innocent young woman at the beginning perish. I thought no way are they gonna let this chick die at the very beginning of the movie, but there she goes.
