This always bothered me

It isn't addressed in the movie, but I always wonder whether the car is actually his or if he steals it. If it's his, why does he need a slimjim to get into it? If it's not, why would someone leave the keys under the visor in a locked car parked in the middle of the street? Was this little detail really necessary? I imagine it's in there to give the viewer an impression of Peter's character, but it doesn't make much sense.

It's been a while since I've seen this, but I think it was ambiguous as to whether the car was legitimately his or not. As for the keys, I didn't find it weird, because we know how he has his mental illness and how it affects the way he interacts with his environment. He could barely check out a book at the library.

Notice the state of the car he's in... windows pretty much either broken/smashed out completely and replaced with copious amounts of newspaper. This to me seemed like his way of combating his paranoia. Like the scene where he thinks he's being chased by police or something, but there's no one behind him.

I guess he locked the keys inside the car.

I wondered about that too. Who would be stupid enough to leave their keys over the visor?
