What does the title mean?

i thought it was a reference to the shaving scene. at least partially. the "clean" part might be more ambiguous.

Just from the top of my head, I would think that it refers to the main character's desire to cut away his past and start off with a clean slate. He suspects there is something wrong with himself and tries his best to be a good man.
