This film is by far the

most honest and realistic depiction of mental illness in cinematic history. I've seen plenty and none hit the matter on target like clean, shaven. if you own this movie pass it around and make people watch it its really a different kind of beautiful film with its use of sound and imagery and the story it tells of a mans mind really blew me away as i hope it does others. the criterion dvd is great and is only 20 dollars on dvdplanet.com

I actually got to see this film projected at a special screening with Lodge Kerrigan when I was in college. It was very cool to hear Lodge speak about the film and to talk with him afterwards. He's a great guy and one helluva filmmakers! It's one of my favorite films and I'm so happy it got picked up by Criterion! Their DVD is a substantial improvement over the last one, so anyone that's a fan of this film should definitely pick it up!!!

It really is.

I watched it for the first time many years ago and now last time I saw it some months ago it just blew me away. It's absolutely stunning and intense.
Its creepy dark atmosphere cannot be reached by hardly any other film existing.

I recall reading an interview years ago, I believe in Filmmaker magazine with Lodge Kerrigan where he mentioned that he had a friend who had Schizophrenia and this to whatever extent initially formed the idea for making the film.

He also made it I think over a few years in piecemeal, paying for production costs whenever he had the money.

The thing I have always been greatly impressed by with this film is the brilliantly effective use of sound to illustrate the main characters state of mind.

reply

I agree, it is an astounding movie.
