Well, the problem isn't just with it being, um, not well known. There are...what...7...8 Children of the Corn's now? You can buy any one of them online on DVD, save for the second one.
It’s a distribution dispute, really.
Children of the Corn 1 was released under “New World Pictures”. New World went out sometime in the 80’s, its last release being the well known “Heathers”. So, when it came time to make the sequel, a new distributor had to be found. At the time, Miramax had just started it up a new branch (which you may have heard of, by now) called Dimension. Dimension was supposed to be the edgier side of Miramax. Now it releases most of the mainstream horror flicks you know and love today.
Being that Dimension was still a young company, Paramount went in to pay for the film as well. Paramount is not a part of the whole Buena Vista line (Disney, Hollywood, Touchstone, New Line, and Miramax make it up), and so the rights to the movie were torn between Dimension (Miramax) and Paramount.
This coupled with the fact that there isn’t too large of a fan base crying themselves to sleep at night because they can’t get their hands on a DVD, re-mastered version of COTC 2, has led to the film going out of print. They just don’t make it anymore.
It's very possible they will one day, but I kindly doubt it. The series is dated now, no one really knows about it unless they were around in the 80's/90's, are horror buffs, or are familiar with the short story. They just don't have much of a reason to put it back into circulation. It would be a waste of money to a certain extent.
That being said, it would be nice for them to bring it back. Unfortunately, I also doubt that they'd still have the footage lying around to make up interviews or what have you. Still, it would be nice.
