Anybody seen the original Chinese version of this film? Is Jackie's cameo as completely nonsensical and unexplained? Or was something cut from the US release that added to it...?

No, it was really like that. I thought it was just bizarre, and didn't really add anything, though perhaps it was just that he almost ran into Yang again after their first adventure.
