Not in the book, but added by the director for the film. It is the invention of his ex-partner, Bee Gilbert...who was "The Cement Garden" producer, and also the mother of two of his sons. The younger one, Ned Birkin starred in the film as Tom. Bee made up the nightly prayer for him, and she and his brother would say it to him every night.

In case your interested, the older brother Anno was killed in 2001. He was poet and musician. His family released his words and music and used to profits to set up a children's orginaztion for the street kids in Africa to learn art, music, film, and other forms of expression.
