John Brosnan wrote Carnosaur to cash in on a predicated dinosaur trend in the 80s... but the trend never came, and Brosnan's novel helped inspire Jurassic Park which caused the real dinosaur boom in the 90s.

I don't think Crichton had ever even heard of Brosnan's novel when he wrote JP.
