Very cheesy for a gangster film

Now don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie, but as a real gangster film fan I just thought this was very cheesy. Does anyone else get where I am coming from or should I articulate?

I find you crazy as hell....do you get where I'm coming from or should I articulate?

This wasn't cheesy. I guess he must be referring to the romantic elements of the story? sorry OP, but even the baddest *beep* like Carlito have got to love.

I thought the ending, score and romance were rather cheesy

It's a good gangster film and just like "Casino" was considered a sequel to "Goodfellas", "Carlito's Way" is basically the sequel to "Scarface." But it will never be as legendary as "Scarface" though.

No one on this planet thought either"Casino" or "Carlito's Way" were sequels to anything. They were 4 completely different movies..

Gotta agree with you. But of the three the score bothered me most.

Maybe it's only 3/4 of a gangster film?

In my opinion, this movie isn't cheesy, it's just from a different angle.
I'ts about a guy really trying to get out of the lifestyle, sorting his priorities out. And the acting is brilliant. Sean Pen is the true star in this one. Al Pacino does a solid job, as (almost) always, just like the rest of the cast, but Sean delivers above and beyond...

The acting was excellent hands down but I would have to agree with OP that the score didnt complement the picture as well as it could have.

That was my thought when I watched it just before. Good film, but very cheesy and a bit silly. It just seemed too over the top and the dialogue was corny for lack of a better word. 7/10 for me.

I agree!!

I get where you're coming from. "You are so Beautiful" just doesn't seem to fit in a gangster movie for me. The romantic subplot was incredibly cheesy, I didn't get any chemistry between the two. The woman was needy and not very well written in my opinion.

It is cheesy but its still brilliant, Pacino is great even when he does look a bit out of place in this genre.

It seems cruel to slag him seeing as he is talented but he doesnt have that same natural vibe that de niro has. Samr goes for the script/plot Casino and goodfellas were taken from actual true accounts and made by a vurtuoso and perfectionist director so this film and all other gangster films will always fall short and seem like week wannabe in comparison.

This is more of a redemption sentimentle romantic drama whic happens to be in a Gangster setting

Exactly! You hit the nail on the head. This is not meant to be a gangster film. If you want that, watch the three aforementioned films. This is a drama, and the romantic relationship is very important to the story line. That being said, the score is a bit cheesy, but I didn't really find it that bad until I saw the movie three or four times. I also have to disagree about the scene in Gail's apartment with "You Are So Beautiful" playing. I thought the scene was great, and the song fit perfectly, but that's just my opinion.

I agree that the the 'you are so beautiful' actually fits and isn't one of the lame elements of the film. Like the others have said the film has some great moments, Sean Penn is different class and Pacino is not over the top and likable. I think there is a good concept great players involved in the cast/director andsome fantastic quotable scenes, but all in all it falls a bit short because of a cliched script so we aren't wowed but if you take it for what it is, a good film when on tv to flick on to then its fine but its no masterpiece and you just feel what with De Niros body of work Pacino was trying to emulate him somehow and every effort just seems like an actor trying to play a street smart wise guy and we don't the movie

The love story was better than most other gangster or action films where the protagonist falls in love with a beautiful woman just because he has a penchant for a beautiful face/figure. And because of the cinematic window dressing. Out of everything else in Carlito's life that was sucking him back into old, troubled ways, Gail was the "face that didn't change," the person, and symbol, that enabled him to find goodness in a mired past and still have hope in a better future, even when everything and everyone else he's ever known revelead themselves for what they really were: out for themselves.

Carlito might have been *cheesy* at times, I credit the music in the movie for that only, but it was also absolutely honest in what it depicted: the danger that follows even you even after you're done chasing it, the people you can never trust, and the improbability to leave a lifestyle that offerss zero honesty, hope, or chance of redemption.

This film wasn't flashy. It was the answer to what happens to the leads who've lead that life. What really happens. In place of the unstoppable tough guys is a rich story with an age-old lesson that many still haven't and won't ever learn.
