Jack London: Myth or Talent

Ever notice how any discussion about Jack London is about everything except his actual writing? He's more of a famous drunk, and if his writing doesn't bore the skin right off your schmuck, you are a famous drunk, as well. I saw a panel discussion on London, and I'm not even sure so much as a single title was mentioned. It was all funny or pathetic anecdotes about London's Glen Ellen Home (a State Park); about his loves and disasters -- it was desperately about anything other than his abysmal, self-absorbed, morally and esthetically constipated literature. Like Malcolm Lowry, he is not a great writer, nor even an especially good one. He's a famous drunk and a conversation piece for San Francisco Intellectuals (now, there's an oxymoron for you!).
