Why did Lavin want to be Kevin's mother?

He decided not to hit Kevin when Kevin called him Mom..what was his issue of being his Mother?

Every parting from you is like a little eternity.

no idea... I just watched it last night and I thought that was strange.

Probably just a weird hangup of his... (he had plenty of those)

Well, if you watch "the boys of st vincent fifteen years later" which is the sequel, you will understand. The grown up Kevin explains everything.

lavin did not have any parents when he was growing up, he was an orphan. so he might have developed this longing for a family especially a mother and he said to kevin he was his mother, the night where he beat kevin up for saying he was not his mother and his mother was dead. now, when lavin is going to beat up kevin at the end of the first part, kevin calls him mother and lavin stops pehaps because he sees how kevin "looks up to him" or "cares for him." but kevin does it just to stop him and follow orders and does not really feel this way.

I wondered that too, seemed very odd, I could even understand if he wanted him to call him "father" but "mother"? Very weird.
