This movie seemed to destroy three women's careers at once

Kim Basinger, Sherilyn Fenn, and Jennifer Lynch's:

It was only a verbal contract, and Basinger wanted out. Then she decided she was out, contract be damned. The makers of the film sued her, and they won. It cost Basinger $8.1 million (the initial settlement) to get out of this movie. The lawsuit, and various counter-suits and appeals, was a serious blow to Basinger’s career. (Well, The Marrying Man and The Real McCoy didn’t help either.) Bad movie or no, Hollywood frowns on people who break contracts. For most of the mid to late ’90s, Basinger had no substantial work, and actually declared bankruptcy at one point. Recently, she is showing signs of a comeback with her role in LA Confidential. But before this, prospects were pretty dim for Kim.

I remember being a fan of hers during her initial Twin Peaks fame, then watched her in Of Mice and Men which was great casting for her, ignored Boxing Helena because it looked too weird, then ignored the unfunny Basic Instinct spoof she was in, then didn't see her for years in anything of a note other than a small role in the Titans pilot.

Damn shame, she had the looks and talent to carve out a much better movie career.

I got bored of the new Twin Peaks show so I didn't see her return in that either, which was only four episodes I believe.

Boxing Helena was a troubled movie right from the start but it had no effects on its cast members, primarily Kim Basinger as she subsequently starred in L.A. Confidential (1997) for which she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress four years after pulling out of this movie. While she eventually disappeared from the limelight afterwards, it has no particular connection with this movie rather than a series of factors in her personal life. She made a comeback of sorts with an appearance as a former lover of Christian Grey in Fifty Shades Darker (2017) but has otherwise kept a low profile.

Sherilyn Fenn[1] is mostly know from her appearances on Twin Peaks in the 1990’s but since then, she has remained fairly busy and this year alone, she has five projects lined up. She also acted in highly rated series like Ray Donovan, Shameless and I saw her most recently in S.W.A.T. She is also set to portray silent film star Alla Nazimova in a Rudolph Valentino biopic titled Silent Life. [2], which is presently in post production.

Director Jennifer Lynch has also remained busy and you can catch up with her bio on her official IMDB list.[3]Despite the failure of the aforementioned movie, I would say it had no bearing on her reputation as a director as she has remained prolific with her work.

I would like to end this by stating that just because one film failed, it doesn’t always necessarily mean the end of one’s career. Rather, many in the industry can tell the difference when a person works really badly then when they don’t so when a project of them fails once, they aren’t punished for eternity for it.

It hurt Kim Basinger, but I don't think it ruined her career - as she won an Oscar a few short years later. However, it did destroy everyone else's career.

Can an actor quit mid-shoot on a film if he realizes the movie will be bad and will negatively affect his/her career?
