Viggo on Boiling Point
Viggo was at the CineVegas Film Festival this past weekend being honored with a Half Life award. Don't know if you're aware of this, but Dennis Hopper is on the Board of Directors for the festival. Dennis attended Viggo's interview and introduced Viggo.
I guess I should have realized, what with Dennis being there, that Boiling Point would come up. I had my copy with me but I thought it would be a surprise if I actually got to ask Viggo for his autograph, and maybe amusing to him that anyone would want that particular movie signed. But I didn’t realize just how much fun those two had together filming that movie. In my review of Boiling Point I said it looked like two movies pieced together badly. I suggested getting rid of the cop background (Wesley Snipes) and concentrating more on Red Diamond (Dennis Hopper) and Ronnie (Viggo). Well, Viggo touted this filming experience as the most laughs he ever had making a movie. Dennis kept him in stitches the whole time. In particular, he mentioned this one scene where they were crammed into an elevator, just Dennis and Viggo and the cameraman, going up to rob this guy towards the end of the film. They expected to get it done in one or two takes, but Dennis kept giving Viggo significant looks and saying things to crack him up and Viggo would slide down the wall as his legs gave out on him until he was out of the picture entirely. They ended up doing 14 takes and that scene never made it into the movie.
Viggo said there was enough material of them cutting up that Dennis should get it together and re-edit the film. I would totally go for that and I started applauding loudly … I don’t think many other people were, but they just didn’t get it.
