Fell Asleep near end and have some questions....

Yesterday I was sick and did what I always do when I feel like crap...lie on the couch and watch IFC until I fall asleep. This movie came on and I was intrigued (admittedly, mostly to see Cates in another movie besides "Fast Times at RH"). Yes, I know she was in Gremlins but I haven't seen that since I was very young and do not remember it.

I dozed off when Sid was searching for Beth in his car, and woke up during the credits. Can someone tell me what happens at the end? Did he find her? I was also confused as to why Nick came back...did he want to get back with Carol or Beth? The Plot summary says he came back for Carol, but I thought it was Beth. Maybe the person who wrote it made a mistake?

Also, am I the only one who noticed Tim Roth's accent change a lot? I'm not sure where he is from, but it seemed like part of the time he was trying to fake an American acccent, especially since Nick is from America, but many times the actor's real accent comes back with a vengenance. It also seems to go back and forth mid-sentence, from badly-imitated American accent to British sounding to Australian? to ???? I'm not good at placing accents, but if he was supposed to be American in this movie, he did not succeed. I know some European actors have a hard time faking an American accent (Cary Elwes, Kate Winslet, etc.), but for most actors, it just shows here and there on certain words. Seemed to me (and remember, I was very tired and on meds during this movie) that his accent sounded rather American, for the most part, until the end when he returned home.

Thanks for help with the ending and any comments on my comments!

Tim Roth is British. Yes, many British sound a little odd when speaking "American" and I must add perhaps even more so the other way around! The only successful accent by an American speaking with a British accent in a movie that I can think of is Bridget Fonda in Scandal. She did a good job, and a realistic accent too, no exaggerated posh accent like, say, Rene Z. in Bridget Jones

BN: SPOILER WILL FOLLOW!
It seems you did not miss many seconds of the movie: Sid starts looking for Beth: drives through the parking lots for the motels... then the end credits roll. Did he find her? We don't know. It's an open question. My guess is he didn't. And even more important, even if he did find her, would she go back with him?

Thanks for the answers! I was kind of hoping something else happened at the end, but sense I knew I did not fall asleep long, I had a feeling it just ended like that. Just making sure. Boo!

Sorry, I hate endings like that, unless the rest of the plot is substantial enough to hold it up (I can't think of a good way to explain this or good example). This movie was just "ok" on my radar. Something to occupy my time while being sick, and not making me think too much (which I prefer to do when I'm feeling well!)

I agree with you that this is a GREAT movie.

But I do think the end is open for several interpretations.

Personally, I believe it was important that Sid abandoned whatever he was in the process of doing (in this case: painting) and went looking for Beth. All his life he stayed at the same place (Bodies: Rest) and was content. Never really strived for anything one hundred percent. Just sort of drifted along... Finally, he realises what he wants, and goes after it at any cost (Bodies: Motion).

As for Beth, I think she said it very well herself "I never really lived my own life, just someone else's..." She went from one dead-end job to another. From one (not so nice????) boyfriend to the next (Bodies: Rest). Being able to drive away from Sid, who seems like a nice guy, standing there with his arms open and telling her he loves her and they belong together, is her declaration of independence (Bodies: Motion). She needs to find HERSELF before she can find anyone else.

Just my humble interpretation..... But the romantic in me hopes that he'll find her. Maybe not right away, though.

I think if he did find her she would not go back with him.

In Mexico senor, these are the years of sadness.
