Question about the ending (SPOILER)

Wasn't Beth's car in the motel parking lot that Sid drove through? Were we supposed to see that and take it as his having decided at the last moment not to try to get her back, but to just keep driving east on his own, finally doing the travelling he said he didn't want to do? Or was it intended to be that her car was not there, and he was continuing on his quest to find her?

Good question.

At first, I also thought I saw her car in the parking lot. Unfortunately, it's not on Netflix IW anymore so I can't go back and watch that scene again.

But I tend to lean towards her not being there since he never gave an inclination about wanting to travel but he did give an inclination that he loved Beth. So, I'm still going with that wasn't her car and he's still looking for her.

You're right: Her car was not in the lot. I just replied to the original poster with the details of Beth's car, which was definitely not in the lot.

reply

No, Beth's car was not in the lot. I just played the scene of her leaving the house and the scene of Sid looking for her car, and it's not there. Beth drives a green Volkswagen Beetle convertible. There was a white Volkswagen Beetle convertible in the lot, but no green one.

That would have been a strange way to end it, though. I rather like the way it ended, and I assume Sid continued his quest through the night ... and the next night ...

reply

Ohhh...okay, thanks. The production design people should have made sure not to have any Beetles in the lot at all, to avoid confusion, IMO.

You're welcome. Yes, it did seem kind of odd because he sort of looks at that Beetle, but it's definitely not hers. I couldn't even remember what kind of car she drove until I read your post, but I watched those scenes again. There's definitely no sign of her car in that lot.

I just watched this movie again, with no sense at all that I had seen it before. I had the same reaction at the end of the movie, but this time I rewound it to compare with the car from earlier and saw that they were different colors.

Then I came here as I usually do after watching a movie, and was shocked to see this thread from me nine years ago! I suppose I’m getting older and losing my memory, but I do remember other movies that I saw longer ago, so there must be something strangely forgettable about this one even though I did like it pretty well.
