It was such an insult to the tv series. Jim Varney was awful as Jed. I don't know why they picked him. Jed was not that ugly in the tv series. The movie relyed on stupid comedy than just funny comedy. Rob schnider was another problem. This movie didn't need him he's not funny. It's like did the people who made this movie acutually watch the tv series?

shareI agree, Jethro was too soft and gentle. They should have cast somebody much bigger and hayseed-like. I think Jim Varney did his best but I would have to say he was also miscast. He does better doing flat-out in-your-face comedy than "Will Rogers" comedy - that would have been closer to the original Jed. Leachman was OK but too weak. I thought the best portrayals were Ellie May and Miss Jane. Drysdale was fine but only because it was a relatively-weak role and Dabney Coleman made it stronger for the movie.
shareIt's bad, but it's one of those movies that is still watchable and enjoyable. It's completely ridiculous, but it has its monents. I think it's current rating is very punishing. The original television show was also pretty over the top. Overall, they did a decent job paying a modern homage to the classic original.
Jim Varney was a legitimate hillbilly, so I think he worked well. I'm a pretty big fan of Varney, and I agree it's odd to see him playing such a subdued character. But, Varney seemed like a fairly
easygoing fellow. He's nearly unrecognizable as Jed, which I think is impressive, when you factor in his sometimes slapstick, zany character actors he played so well.
If you ask me, this movie nailed it. The show itself was pretty bad and the movie captured that spirit.
