Mentally ill myself, was bothered by parts of it

I mostly rented this movie as I am mentally ill myself.
There were parts of this movie that really bothered me. For one thing, why does Benny's card-playing partner bet his roommate in a game? (This act in itself leads one to wonder if that character is mentally ill). This leads to my next, much bigger, problem. Why on earth does Benny take Sam, a complete and total stranger, to live with him and his (May I remind people that she's mentally ill?) sister? Most people would never let ANY stranger live in their house without at least some references.
Aside from all of that, why was Sam in the bathroom when Benny was taking a shower? Any conversation could have waited until Benny was done.
Just my thoughts.

no, this movie is about two young people who both have mental disabilities, and how a friendship grew between them.
