Wow, I'm not sure we saw the same movie. This is one of my favorite films ever. It's amazing to watch how Jo very consciously goes through this process of changing her facial expressions, her demeanor, her posture etc. in order to pass as a man. Also her speech -- how she flattens out her voice into a monotone, because an expressive voice would give her away. Likewise that she doesn't smile for years -- which created one of the magical moments in the film -- for me, anyway -- when she breaks into a smile with Tinman. I showed this film to a group of high school students who had mostly never watched any movies other than the standard teen action or romance flicks; at first they were reluctant about seeing it, but ended up loving it!

I agree amgluckman, this is one of my favorite films as well. I just think that men don't care for this movie. My husband was like 'there's no way a woman could masquerade as a man like that for so long!'. I'm like 'ummm, this is a true story, so it can happen.' Men are so ignorant.

Your criticism is about as effective as one hand clapping.

Ignore this comment... this was a great film that challenged the genre as much as Unforgiven!

I thought that this film was a wonderful variation of the western. Especially since it challenged the typical notion of masculinity found in this genre. John Wayne was tough, but so was Josephine.

reply

I love John Wayne, but he was pretty fancy, if you catch my drift. Just watch the man, Josephine was much manlier than he was. :)

Did she have warts too?!

Be nice. Remember, wherever you go...there you are.

Not the worst. Just a pretty bad Western. Suited for die hard feminists, though.

I don't know what worts means, but I've seen a lot worse movies.

Not! Good God, I can name thousands of films that are bad. This is a most excellent film. I guess if you're a fan of Batman films, maybe it would be.

I'll tell you in another life, when we are both cats.

I know I'm six years late here, but maybe you could explain why you think this is the worst movie ever? Because while this maybe isn't my favorite movie in the world, I still thought it was good.

Intelligence and purity.
