Non-stop Parade of Shock

This movie has it "all." To name but a few:

1. Incest (sex with mom)
2. Sodomy
3. Eating cockroaches
4. Killing cats
5. Wayward priest
6. Prostitution
7. Robbery
8. Violence
9. Full frontal nudity
10. Multiple murders
11. Paraplegic love triangle

Did I miss anything? This list seems shorter than I imagined.

If you watch enough films like this, you'll probably start wearing black, stay inside all the time, and start thumb tacking doll heads to the basement rafters.

reply

Did I miss anything?

Yes, you missed racism and police brutality.

And they weren't paraplegics, they were spastics. Spastics, in case you don't know, whilst physically deformed have very acute minds trapped in their bodies.

reply

Is spastic a medical term? Or are you just trying to be as shocking as de Heer? Ha.

reply

'Spastic' was a perfectly normal medical term for many years. Nowadays political correctness insists we called it 'Cerebral Palsy'

reply

or 'Scope'......lol

reply

Actually - spastic is the name for a specific type of Cerabal Palsy and could very well be just as mis-judged when (for some reason) 'classifying' the people in the film. It's also a term that many people who suffer from Cerebral Palsy find offensive (I work with disabled students) becuase of the negative connotations it has had over the years.
And paraplegics have just as acute a mind as people with Cerebral Palsy.

Tell me, should paraplegics and other handicapped people have their human emotions ignored? Does it bother you to think that our societal attitudes toward them put them through unrelenting torture and loneliness? Was your fragile little perfect snowglobe world rustled when you realized you can't even picture the severely disabled as human beings with a sex life and interests in romance and human closeness?

And full frontal nudity... what is it about the human form that you find objectionable?

BTW, you forgot to mention atheism, parental abuse, a realization of the tenacity of the human spirit, a succinct explanation of the ridiculous pain religion has wrought upon the human species for centuries, rock music, dancing, eating junk food, profanity, and I'm sure much MUCH more that jars you and makes you consider what human lives other than your own perfect one might be like.

reply

I never got the obsession with killing cats. I take it the filmakers were not cat people.

reply

How would you convey the fact that part of Bubbys sheltered existence was a complete "protection" from the facts of living and dying?

reply

Actually, they were cat lovers =P.... The first cat was feral, so therefore was put down, like many feral cats in Australia (they are pests) and the kitten later on was merely sedated, and one of the crew members ended up adopting the little guy ^_^

Certain shades of the limelight can ruin a girls complexion

Because of evil breeders and irresponsible morons who refuse to have their cat neutered which doesn't even cost anything these days so there's absolutely no excuses other than sheer laziness.

reply

Nonetheless, you can't adopt every feral cat in a given town. You can only work on spay/neuter education.

reply

I love the passion and eloquence in your post, thank you so much for saying what you have. You are a legend.

reply

This movie was screwed up beyond belief, I'll agree with anyone about that; but I feel it was a well-made screwed up beyond belief.

reply

Despite the "shocking" scenes, as many have dubbed them, I never felt that they were out of place or shocking for the sake of being shocking. It (pretty much) all fits together and adds to the overall picture.

If this was a shock flick, I'd expect some of the following:
- Blood, intestines, mutillation
- Vomiting, pus
- Drugs, needles
- Child abuse (besides what is implied between Bubby and his mother)
- Bestiality
... and so on - where are they, hmm?

As for the cats; as someone has said, they're a pest in Aussieland and NZ. They run wild and stray all over the place, and they prey on the native wildlife. That said, I'm a huge cat lover, and if I saw those kids breaking a cat's neck, I would clingwrapped them damn hard...

reply

He gladwrapped the cat because his mother told him that the cat doesn't breath. Once he was taught what breathing was he gladdwrapped the cat to see if she was lying. This is obvious from when he puts the gladwrap to his face and can't breathe. Awesome movie one of my favorites.

Maturity doesn't come with age it comes with the acceptance of responsibility!

"11. Paraplegic love triangle"

How exactly is the fact that disabled people have sexual impulses and feelings shocking?

The fact that even included this is your list, along with full frontal nudity for that matter, shows a degree of emotional immaturity and closed mindedness on your part.
