Fresh, Raw, BRILLIANT!

This film , in a word, is superb! Some of the subject matter is(to say the least) contentious, but its so fresh, you dont care. The performances are faultless, Nicholas Hope who plays Bubby is truly a one- off, if Daniel Day Lewis did this they'd all be screaming 'Oscar'.It works so well thanks to its rawness, please Hollywood, dont ever try to remake this, you'll fail! The story itself is pretty unique,a great premise to then try and film, but its the filming of it they've done so well, so raw its unbelievable, funny and heart-breaking. This should be a cult classic soon, the aussies have done it again!

This is one of my favourite films, totally unique, and certainly contains my favourite scene from any film which just left me gobsmacked:

**********************HERE BE SPOILERS********************

You see, no one's going to help you Bubby, because there isn't anybody out there to do it. No one. We're all just complicated arrangements of atoms and subatomic particles - we don't live. But our atoms do move about in such a way as to give us identity and consciousness. We don't die; our atoms just rearrange themselves. There is no God. There can be no God; it's ridiculous to think in terms of a superior being. An inferior being, maybe, because we, we who don't even exist, we arrange our lives with more order and harmony than God ever arranged the earth. We measure; we plot; we create wonderful new things. We are the architects of our own existence. What a lunatic concept to bow down before a God who slaughters millions of innocent children, slowly and agonizingly starves them to death, beats them, tortures them, rejects them. What folly to even think that we should not insult such a God, damn him, think him out of existence. It is our duty to think God out of existence. It is our duty to insult him. *beep* you, God! Strike me down if you dare, you tyrant, you non-existent fraud! It is the duty of all human beings to think God out of existence. Then we have a future. Because then - and only then - do we take full responsibility for who we are. And that's what you must do, Bubby: think God out of existence; take responsibility for who you are.

The use of music throughout the film is also creative, raw and unerringly beautiful.

I bet half the people that *watched* this movie didn't even get or watch that scene at all.

They got sand in their vaginas over some shocking scenes in the beginning and didn't really pay due attention for the rest of the film.

well i just saw the movie for the first time ever the other day and i loved it. It was such a Unique film experience and caught me really surprised and i love weird movies such as jodorowski's, lynch's, anger's, jeunet and lots of others. The Whole way it was build up with him repeating what other characters had said in other contexts made the movie really weird and something i dont remember seeing before. The part leeds_manc pointed out was deffently also one of my favourite parts. I can understand why someone wont like it but personally i think its a Little gem that does deserve more recognition as its a very different movie experience and in my oppinion every director should atleast try to make orrignial stuff and this one deffently succeeds.

I also love unique weird films like this.

You should check out a Hungarian film called "Taxidermia", it should be right up your alley.

Thanks crawen77 i had actually heard the title mentioned somewhere but not checked it out so i checked what it was about and indeed it could be a movie i would apreciate. I really like movies with allegories and symbolism and another one that eventhough doesnt seem as dark and gritty as taxidermia but has allegories whithin it that happen in the same time period and Eastern europe is underground by emir kusturica and is one of my favourite movies.

Kool Beans!

I'm gonna try out Underground. I know I have watched it once but I can't remember what it's about at all, must've been drunk or something.
And I love his other movies, especially Black Cat White Cat and Arizona Dream

What the hell did you just call me beans or what, i would prefer not being called that, haha. Well besides that, if you have seen "underground" and doesnt remember it you must have been drunk because its a pretty long movie in arround 3 hours of length and i would deffently rank it in a top 50 of my favorite movies. the movie starts in the old yugoslavia in World war II and runs to the balkan war but if you wants to know more just look it up yourself, but the movie is really surreal and it has a great soundtrack and i would recommend this movie to everybody WHO loves a weird movie and who doesnt mind watching films on other languages than English. I have seen Arizona dream but i think its nearly 20 years ago so i dont remember much of it and Black Cat White Cat i havent sadly seen yet but what i have read about it, it deffently sounds like a movie i would like to see and it is one of those movies i'll hopefully grab up soon.

reply

Haha.
Don't worry. I wasn't calling you beans, rather referring to what you said as beans, and that I thought the beans were kool.
(Ok so I'm weird, I wear it like armor)

But now that you elaborate on what the movie is about it came back to me a little, I don't think I've seen the whole thing, and somehow it wound up in my "Watched" folder.Probably sh| tfaced, or in unappreciative company at the time.

I will definitely give it a "shot" again now. (Pun intended... or not)

If you have some more recommendations here, then please post them in a reply and I will do the same.
I found many new favorite movies like this :)

Well fair enough i wasnt sure if you where messing arround with my middle name but anyway i didnt get pi$$ed just thought it was a bit weird but if it had been intended as a pun i certainly has been called alot worse on numerous occations.
Underground is a great movie but it is deffently not for everybody so if you have seen it with someone else it might have ended the screening early so i deffenly think you should give it another chance its a real gem in my book. Well Crawen77 i checked your list of 20 most disturbing movies and eventhough i wouldnt rank them in that order i think we have a very Similar movie taste in many ways and i have seen most of those on your list. you mentioned happines but personally i would recommend everything by Todd Solondz great director and a great storyteller very underapreciated artist. lynch, jeunet, miike and Kubrick was mentioned in that list too and i would recommend everything you can grab by those directors as you can never really go wrong with them. Im not sure exactly what kind of weird movies you are looking for if they have to be eastern european movies with allegories but i perceive it that you are just looking for weird movies that are worth a while looking up so i will try to mention some. "Die Blechtrommel" from 1979 german movie based on the book by gunther grass is a World war II movie about a child that decides to not growup and the movie Works in many ways allegorrical. kenneth angers short movies may have some interest and he has inspirred lynch an lots of other directors but they doesnt Work like ordinary movies but this guy is one of the essential weird directors of all time and has been making films since the 40'ies and still does but look up the earlier stuff. werner herzogs movies are deffently also worth checking out atleast what he made with Klaus Kinski. Alejandro Jodorowski is one of my personal favourittes and his surreal movies are filled with allegories and metaphors and everybody WHO loves movies should atleast Watch El Topo, Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre. I could also see "the cell" in your list and i would recommend you seeing "the fall" by the same director eventhough it isnt as disturbing but also a surreal movie. Martyrs is a movie that does desserve to be on your list if you ask me pretty creepy film. Wim Wenders earlier movies and jim jarmusch is deffently worth checking out too as they are very orriginal and sometimes pretty surreal. Lars von trier is a great director and most of his movies desserves credit. the South korean director Chan-wook Park WHO made "oldboy" the orriginal movie is a real artist whom never seize to amaze me with great shot movies with amazing stories. the soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky has made some amazing movies aswell and has inspired a director like von trier and Tarkovsky's movie "Stalker" is a weird masterpiece. Well i think im gonna stop writing suggestions as this is evolving into somekind of an long essay, haha. I'll recommend that you check my profile and see my ratings as a huge ammount of the movies i have rated are pretty surreal or original to some extent atleast when you scroll Down a Little as i mostly rated movies i like . I hope you get some fun out of some of those directors and Again sorry about the lengthy reply.

Those were the most brilliant lines of the script. It's all right there in that one paragraph. This movie lover has been an atheist for some time but have never heard as good an explanation as to why atheism is the true path.
