How likely is a proper DVD release?

It's absolutely ridiculous that this isn't available on DVD.

Likewise Drowning by Numbers and Prospero's Books.

I've yet to see any of these the way they were supposed to be seen.

You can always plunk down a buck & a half for the Japanese laserdiscs, each.

reply

Are they of good AV quality?

reply

A friend of mine used to rent rare and foreign laserdiscs from a really good movie rental store in Memphis (I think it was there, but maybe not) and tape them to VHS. He played me parts of both movies (Macon and Tempest) that he copied from the laserdiscs, off of the VHS tapes and I was impressed by THAT, so I would guess that the quality is good.

This was a few years ago though, before I became a total movie freak, so my memory may not be completely reliable.

reply

You mean on the BIG scren right?

reply

Actually, no, I mean I'd settle for seeing them in a form that doesn't resemble a 50th generation dub of a bootleg VHS from the 1970s.

Though I wouldn't mind catching them on the big screen (but considering Greenaway's claims that cinema is dead and his embracement of TV technology, I think he's fine with the small screen).

Sure. It's ridiculous that Greenaway is who he is and either doesn't care to create high-quality digital transfers of his entire corpus (a high-end copy of Hubert Bals Handshake would be nice; that short is incredible) for esoteric/artistic reasons or is constantly thwarted by businesses unwilling to risk the finances said transfers plus distro would incur.

reply

There's way more obscure stuff put out on DVD for much smaller audiences than Greenaway enjoys.

Maybe there are copyright issues.

And I agree, Hubert Bals Handshake is amazing.

I have just bought the Austrailian release (SIREN) from a charity shop for 50p and the quality is superbly watchable.. It is not ideal for purists AS the frame is cropped and there is colouring issues but it is a very nice quality release otherwise.. Buy it now...

**Please note**
The cover states region 4 BUT it is in fact region 0
