The nasty parts

what is so controversial about this film? Can anyone tell me?

reply

A man gets gored by an ox.
A woman is raped 200 and something times. But, imagine that directed by Peter Greenaway. No punches are pulled.
But, it's a brilliant film and should be seen.

You forgot the bit where the kid is dead & everyone eats him, how's that for breaking the taboos, huh.

Never finish what you can't start! ;)

yeah they don't eat him. they just abuse the *beep* out of him and then cut him into pieces when he's dead. they might as well have eaten him. lol

reply

Of course this is all fake right???

The violence is not the issue here, did you guys really miss the point?

It's about the brutality and hipocrisy of organized religion, so it's easy to see why it's so controversial.

And, truth be told, it is a bit on the bloody, violent side. Not graphically violent(except for the ox scene and the child's fate), but the idea of a woman being raped to death is absolutely disgusting and deeply disturbing.

reply

Wait, I still don't understand...WHY is this movie so hard to find?
I've heard you don't see her getting raped, so what's the big deal? Gored by an ox? THAT'S a reason why it's controversial? Uh.
I don't understand what's so horrible about this film that it would be banned almost everywhere.
Not that I really want to see it, but it's just surprising that a film with Ralph Fiennes and Julia Ormond would be censored to such a crazy degree.
Can anyone explain a little more?

reply

Nevermind. I found it, watched it, and was disgusted. This is a poor film, so those of you who are searching for it...don't bother. In my opinion, it is not worth it AT ALL. I honestly wish I hadn't seen it, not because of it's vulgarity, but because it was just BAD...no genius in it whatsoever, contrary to what many people have claimed. It was even laughable at times.

you really don't strike me as someone who can appreciate avant garde cinema with subtext and "points" to make. May I suggest "American Pie" it might be more your speed.

reply

Ugh cinephiles are all the same. Get over yourself. If one doesn't like one of their beloved arty films, they pull the 'sh-tty teen/rom comedy' card on you. Gee how original

I think one of then disturbing parts is that the virgin daughter is being played by an actress but still is most likely raped to death. It reminds me a bit of Salome's Last Dance. The scene goes on for a long time behind a screen and you can hear her screaming for help. The scene where the guy gets stabbed by the cow is long too, very graphic and horrible. I would recommend the film though.

Oh and the people chopping up the child at the end for relics. That is graphic too.

In my opinion many punches were pulled by Greenaway. I've seen The Accused and Death Wish, but I was totally shocked by the lethal mass rape of the actress playing her role in the play, perhaps being a bit snobbish, but then tricked by two of her co-players into a horrible fate.
And then the bishop and his gang started knifing the little boy's naked body, slicing off his hands and feet.

What started as a weird miracle/nativity play (I saw this at a cinema during Christmas time 1993), grabbed me by the throat for the next week, hell, the whole darn next year 1994!

I love Peter Greenaway's work. But this film - however great - I just can't see it again.

I was expecting 10 times worse to be honest. Then I finally saw it and was like...oh.....not too bad. I mean yes, the content is disturbing and all, but it could have been shown in worse ways. Though the opening scene is quite something!

As a cinephile I can get easily annoyed with pretenders who suggest American Pie and think they're being clever (insulting).

But I get sad when I see so many supposed cinephiles being pretentious over any bit of crap that is controversial, simply because it has a lot of sex.

And then they pretend "What's the big deal", as if that very thing isn't the only thing locking them in to the film.
