This is the part of the storyline where I got really lost: why do Dieyi and Xaiolou go back to their old school/masters after they become famous actors? Do they then end up running the school or something?
(I do intend to watch the movie again when I'm awake.)
out of the shame they both carried for Xialou having fallen so far off his path. (He'd completely stopped performing Opera.) The master beat them both because of it.
Not long after, the old master died and they returned to the school to honor him after his death.

In the traditional Chinese culture, teachers are very much repected. There's a saying in Chinese: teacher for (even) one day, father for the whole life. Their master is regarded as their father, or even more important than the father. That's why they must be punished by the master if they had done something dishonoring, also why they arranged for the master's funeral as sons.
In the old times, most families didn't worship God or Buddha, but worship Heaven, Earth, Emporor, Parents and Teachers.
Is this still true today?
