Favorite scene?

My favorite scene in the movie is when Cheng Dieyi and Xiaolou must face the red guards and are forced to betray one another. I think Leslie Cheung's performance during this scene was one of the finest ever to grace the screen. I was also moved by the emotion in Gong Li's eyes when her character, Juxian is denounced by her own husband when he insists he doesn't love her.

I also love the scene when young Douzi flubs his line once again when performing in front of the Opera House owner for the first time. I just love the way Chen Kaige directed this scene, with the music playing and then stopping in the background as Xiao Douzi walked toward the camera.

What is your favorite scene?

When Chen Dieyi swirls in the spotlight.

My favorite scene was when Xiao Si betrays Dieyi and takes his place in the performance. It was so heartbreaking to see that Dieyi could no longer even perform with Xiaolou. When he took the headdress from Juxian and placed it on Xiaolou's head, I started crying. It was so sad.

How heartbreaking it was to watch Cheng Dieyi walking away with tears in his eyes. When he shrugged off the robe that Juxian put on his back, we knew it was really over.

I also liked the scene where Dieyi is going through Opium withdrawl and Juxian holds him and rocks him back and forth. In his haze, he mistakes her for his mother and repeats the words he said just before his mother chopped off his extra finger- "Ma, my hand is freezing. It feels like ice." There are so many powerful scenes in this movie, it's tough to narrow it down to one.

Another scene I really liked was when Dieyi and Xiaolou find her hanging and then they both realize how much they had betrayed her and how responsible they are for her feeling the need to kill herself, really powerful scene.

I think that the interplay between Juxian and Dieyi is more than simple jealousy. I think that Dieyi does indeed see a bit of his mother there not only in Juxian's being a prostitute, but her desperation in trying to find a better life. I think at the very least he pities her, and esp during the opium withdrawl scenes, he views her as a mother-type figure.

I also loved the interaction between Dieyi and Juxian and understood how complex a situation it was for Dieyi when she came into Xiaolou's life. I love the scene when they first meet and he asks her what opera experience she has. When she asks what made him think she had opera experience and he replies, "Just the way you're overplaying your role", he really laid down the rules of their relationship to one another early.

Okay, this was a tiny scene in comparison but I loved it.

My favorite was when Cheng Dieyi and Xiaolou, prior to the Japanese invasion, were getting dressed for rehearsal. There was a little moment between the two that was so sweet. It sorta alluded to them being more than just platonic friends...

Cheng takes Xiaolou about the waist and sort of tickles him. I thought that was so sweet. It let the audience in on the fact that they were actually in love, but it was unrequited...which made the story that much more tragic at the end.

and you just reminded me of another one that I love. Remember when Dieyi and Xiaolou are in their dressing room after Xiaolou first mentions Juxian and the discussion turns to their devotion to Opera? Dieyi is scolding Xiaolou about not remembering their master's words regarding how they should stick together. When Dieyi flew from around the corner and said to Xiaolou, " I want to be with you forever! I'm talking about a lifetime. One day, one minute, one hour away makes it less than a lifetime!" I may not be giving an exact quote but it was something to that extent. I just loved the emotion in Leslie Cheung's eyes when he said that.

I think Xiaolou always knew that Dieyi was in love with him but it was an uncomfortable subject for him, so he'd just chalk it up to Dieyi taking his opera life too seriously.

my favourit scene was at the end when Dieyi confuses his line and says "i am a man" when he realises he is actually a man that lived his like as a woman and kills himself. Sorry for my English I am Greek. I first saw this movie when i waw 13 and it surelly touched me then as it still does.

The same favourite as yours - the betrayal scene. The photo direction and red colour scheme of the scene was one of the most breathtaking I have ever seen in an Asian film, I wish I had watched this film in a theatre when it was first released.

reply

Yeah, I wish I'd seen the film when it was in theaters, too. Though I'd probably have been too young to appreciate its beauty at that time. I've seen this film so many times now that I don't even have to really read the subtitles anymore even though I don't speak a word of chinese. I've just memorized all of the scenes.

Any scene where the Beijing Opera was represented!

Those scenes are just magic! The beautiful costumes, the strange singing ("strange" for westerners like me), the lyrics, the movements, the ecstatic reaction of the audience, etc.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well I have others

I guess I found almost every scenes to be at least contain something beauty and meaningful, but what I think the most memorable is when Dieyi and Xiaolou teasing each other after a performance and ended up with Dieyi tipping his fingers on Xiaolou's waist from rear, and next thing they are staring at each other with a certain silentness as if each have some kind of though flowing in their mind. Implicitly Tempting....

I also have a certain feeling, kind of pity and and symphaty in the scene where Juxian bringing an umbrella to Xiaolou in the theater saying that it's about to rain. A very simple scene indeed, almost pass by meaningless to others, but I found it implicitly delivers a message of how much of Juxian care for her husband. It makes me really believe then that despite belonged to a brothel once but Juxian really married her husband in an account of love, look at how she stayed anguish with Xiaolou at hard times, and later when she was denounced by her husband which lead to her suicide, it's very touching and cliche. Damn it! Just writing it down here trigger my feeling of sorry for her right away.

And there really is a lot more hidden messages in each scene. Oh and yes, you got to watch it again and again to dig every detail you might miss.

Imdb Rating 7.8? I rarely comment on imdb rating, but this movie really deserves at least an 8.5++ if only just everyone(majority of foreign viewer) really understand the origin and could see the beauty within.
