A nasty retort to this booorrring flick!

I wish I had a concubine while I was watching this boring flick. Then maybe I would have fell asleep happy!!! This movie had so much hype behind it. Everytime I looked into asian cinema this flick came up as a must see. I have to say I was not impressed. It had all the qualities of an epic but it had no soul. It never ended. I could have cut this movie into an hour and a half or at least an hour and 45 minutes easily. NOT ALL LONG MOVIES DESERVE EXCELLENT RATINGS PEOPLE! I loved the cinematography, acting, props and even the story could have worked (if the director and writers didn't drop the ball) but the screenplay dragged on foreverrrrrrrrrrr. I found myself hoping that they would move to Hiroshima or Nagasaki sometime during WW II just so I could see this piece of "candied crap apples" end with a bang! However I am sorry to say that they didn't move and now I must regret (for the rest of my life) the 3 hours I wasted watching Farewell,My Concubine. Farewell?----- more like get the hell out! DON"T WASTE YOUR TIME UNLESS YOUR TIRED!

LAST MOVIE SEEN: "Farewell my concubine" Rated by me:4

Why would they move to Hiroshima or Nagasaki? they never went there...this movie takes place in China.

reply

Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Maybe you better stick to your Superhero movies that you seem to like so much.

May I ask why would the main characters move to the country which was robbing their homeland and murdering their people ???? Well.. u don't understand the movie at all, that's why u think it boring . What u wrote juz shows how ignorant u r about the history and culure of China ,and u totally missed the essence of the film , so u r in no position to comment on it.

Yes, Sir. I completely agree that this film was too long and made no sense. I didn't even care enough to see it all the way through.

How can you judge a film you didn't even properly see? Sometimes I wish they did some kind of an education or intelligence test before allowing people to post on IMDB.

aye aye, i totally agree this film is waaaaaay too drawn out. Too much drama and content. Instead of 3 hrs of storyline, it should have .5 hrs of story, then 2.5 hrs of random explosions and blood and gore. Oh, and of course add in random gratuitous sex scenes to that. That'd make a PERFECT Hollywood film, and by watching that you TOTALLY didn't waste 3 hrs of your pathetic existence. :D

Usually I don't respond to these aggressive messages, everybody is entitled to their own opinions. And yes, I felt at times this movie could be trimed, that it was soo much that I felt lost within it. But, I have never heard such shameless comments come from anybody. To say that it would be entertaining to see these characters go to Hiroshima or Nagasaki to die with thousands of other inncent civilians, quickly or painfully, unexpectedly, or possibly live to watch a whole country be torn apart by losing their crops, fish market, and families due to cancer- is far beyond insensitive or a poorly placed joke.
The first few mins. of this film upset me, but then again I'm sensitive, but I still felt there was an obvious power at work that clung through most of the film. I would suggest next time you watch the Matrix or something along those lines, think about how every person who dies in that film, every Police Officer just doing their job and then messed with the wrong bad@$$ had a life, a family, maybe children, or possibly a cat that now is stricken. Seriously, that's what life is and films that utilize this are much better, and I think you could really use to get back in touch with these essential connections, and feel ashamed for the ridiculously cruel and insensitive comments you have thrown upon me this gray morning. And nobody probably read all this, sigh.

Perhaps "Death Proof" would be more likeable to the thread starter. I sat through that piece of crap last night hoping some sort of storyline would emerge. At the end my wife and I looked at each other, saying "Huh?"

I am currently reading a book, "China Road," which is making me interested in things Chinese. It is about the author's accounts of his travels down highway 312, China's route 66.

"Concubine" unfolded like a distant siren call to me. I had Tivo'd it recently and watched in three different installments. The film slowly drew me in, hypnotized me and I was powerless to leave until the finale.

The landscape created was bewitching and the insight into Chinese culture and history was fascinating. This is great filmmaking...

don't sigh, i read it. and i agree. it shocks me how unfeeling people can be, and how they can make stupid jokes. and be so ignorant about world history. i'm no expert but even i know hiroshima has absolutely nothing to do with the film. i didn't like the film and it was too long but at least i gave it a chance. and what i want to know is why the thread-starter thought everyone would be so interested in THEIR opinion in the first place

I really didn't like this movie but then again I really didn't do my research before watching this crap. I was not relizing I was basicly watching a Chinese verison of "Brokeback". And BTW, just because someone don't like a over-hyped movie, that don't make them stupid. Get over yourselves, it is just a stupid movie.

reply

I think the scenes were very detailed and they touched on the taboo subject of homosexuality, and back then in 1993, when the film was made, it was still a bit shocking. I dont think it would have the same impact if made today.

reply

Yeah you're right, cuz Brokeback Mountain totally came BEFORE this movie. This is nothing more than a cheap Chinese "remake" of Brokeback...NOT!

You know if it weren't for that one comment I might've given you the benefit of the doubt and think you weren't actually stupid. And now you've proved everyone else's point. Deal with it, and get over yourself.
