This is a powerful film about love, jealousy, and vengeance. It is very well done, and so it's no wonder that you're so affected by it.

The relationship of the two male leads is as complicated as fine opera itself. One of them, as a boy, is pretty much forced into the role of a woman, a role he decides to embrace in it's fullness. The other takes the manly role, always being the tough guy, even to the point of pretending his art does not matter.

They love each other. Period. And the love is mixed as brothers, lovers, friends, with each one accepting differing amounts of these facets. Both see the beauty in the other, and both are bound to each others' fates.

The concubine eventually realizes that he was living a dream the whole time, and that the dream has ended...and he chooses death instead of living without it. The king realizes he never was the king that his concubine needed to complete her(him)self, never could be...and both realizes and accepts his friend's tragic fate.

This was a hell of a brave film to take on these things and portray them with honesty and candor.
