In 1993? It seems only recently have the Oscars been putting homosexual movies into nominations (and I think there's an agenda there for the past three years with Brokeback Mountain, Ellen DeGeneres as their next host, and then Milk).

Besides, the Oscars can put any film that doesn't get accepted (enough) by America/North American or doesn't necessarily have English-spoken dialogue into the Best Foreign Film category now. Although I'm not a hardcore Oscar conversationalist.

But the Oscars are fickle, and if you find they don't necessarily agree with your tastes, then it might be good to tell other people that and to quit putting Oscar onto the high-horse that it's gotten to. Aren't the Oscars really just a popularity contest? Ziyi Zhang got to be the first Asian or Chinese to get to be part of the Academy Awards' membership, but even when I was a more of a fan of hers (before I found a bit of her off-screen attitude and antics), I had to wonder if it was because she was pretty and popular, and if there should have been someone more worthy of the title.

"Belle epoque" won, a spanish light comedy. It's a very well done and entertaining movie, with something of Billy Wylder in it... but "Farewell my concubine" is better (I'm spanish, by the way).

"Belle epoque" director, Fernando Trueba, told the spanish press that Wylder himself reassured him about winning the oscar, commenting that the academy found the chinese film too long and complicated. I have to say that Trueba hasn't made another movie as good as "Belle epoque" in the later years.

Unfortunately, neither has Chen Kaige as far as I know...

I agree with jorgddh: "Belle Epoque" is a lovely movie, but "Farewell..." is a GREAT film. Maybe one of the best films of the nineties (and I'm from Barcelona).

There was actually better movies to come out in 1993, however, this would have been a decent choice from them if this film actually did win. Imo the film that won the Oscars for 1993 was the definite winner.
