Gong Li.......

I agree. I'm pissed that the film, although nominated for Best Foreign Film, didn't take home the Oscar. This is absolutely the best movie I have ever seen.

Gong Li is one of the greatest actresses of our generation, IMO. It's a shame that American audiences aren't as partial to her as they are to Zhang Ziyi but with all of the acclaim and recognition that Li receives in China, I doubt she is bothered by it as much as we are.

I've only seen her in this movie and in "Raise the Red Lantern", but I think she's truly a magnificent actress. These two performances by her indeed affected me emotionally. There's something about her that gets your empathy, even when she's being "mean" or "unfair" on screen.
