Beautiful. I just had the fortune of seeing this film last night.

I was fortunate enough to finally see this film last night. Somehow, even as a fan of film, I'd never seen or (shamefully) even heard much of it. But I saw it last night and, wow, what wonderful film. I thought on it over the course of the night after finishing it, and while I knew I'd liked it right after it finished, my appreciation has grown by the hour since. It is still on my mind. Moving, affecting, and truly something special and unique. The story of these two friends and their achievements, hardships, frustration, confusion and beautiful, if troubled, friendship, was so unique and fascinating. A gorgeous film and a beautiful and moving story. It is harsh, and may even seem "strange" to some, at times, but that is part of its beauty. I just needed to get on here and express my love for this moving film. It haunts me, in a good way. Simply amazing. I hope it being on Netflix will bring more people to see what is probably one of the best film's of its decade.

You sound like me the first time I saw this movie! I was so mesmerized by it and thought it was the greatest film I'd ever seen. That was many years ago and I still hold that opinion. I've watched this movie more times than I can possibly remember over the years and it never fails to move me as much as it did the very first time I saw it. I absolutely adore Farewell My Concubine.

An emphatic ditto. This films hits me with as much force on subsequent viewings as it did the very first time. The 3 hours just whiz by from the progression of the story, the amazing acting, and stunning cinematography. It's too bad that the subtitles keep some people from watching it, but wouldn't you hate to see it dubbed? The subtlety in the actors' voices would be sadly lost .

I think dubbing would ruin this movie, too. Part of what made this film so great was the acting. All three leads were magnificent and something would definitely be lost without getting to experience the full impact of the actors' performances. I can't speak a word of Chinese but I have seen this movie so many times, I can pretty much follow it by only glancing now and then at the subtitles since I memorized most of the dialogue long ago. Dubbing would cheapen what I consider to be a PERFECT cinematic masterpiece.

It is on Netflix.

BTW, I am Chinese and I heard of it frequently in China, but I just watched it on Netflix two years after I left Chine. What a shame...
