Why did she have to kill herself?

Why did Lili's character have to kill her self? She could of been happy with Johnny...He loved her!

I cut my finger, that's tragedy!
A man walks into an open sewer and dies, that's comedy!

reply

She couldn't, she was unhappy inside, and not even being with Axel who loved her would have changed that.

Dogs are sons of bitches.

reply

I understand...it's just so sad.

reply

no its not sad. its just a cheap ending of a film who would have been so much better if she just had walked away from everything.

except that it was a beautiful film and lili taylor i so good and beautiful and magic.

heres another good one we are turning cursive letters into knives.

reply

it's not sad,but it's a very good ending. I love this ending best in this movie. She had to kill herself to escape from this weird world completely and to descard him. That's her revenge. Besides, she can not just took him from her mother. She still loved them both.

i know i am bit late for discussion but i saw the movie yesterday . of course i was totally overwhelmed-so much absurd and at the same time it hypnotises you.many things in arizona dream are still unclear to me but about grace i have different theory.her suicide shocked me at first but after some time i guess she wasn't unhappy at the end-just as she said when she and axel were on the roof(elaine's birthday) and to boot the scene with her on the chair floating with the balloons<that was so surrealistic> i guess now that the suicide was natural for her-she needed only few moments of happinnes with axel ,she wanted to go further-to die and to be reborn as a turtle.i know that my theory could sound ridiculous but ther are some facts that leaded to my conclusions for example her suicide seemed to me like some kind of ritual-the white dress and other stuff.i'm curious what do you think about it?

reply

the turtle is just metaphor for simple life she wish for. It's true that she strongly belives in reincarnation 'coz she said she never wants to die.

reply

Also one of the last things she says is that turtles always smile, so I guess being reincarnated as a turtle was her vision of a carefree, simple life in eternal happiness.

reply

I think the point was that she felt she had no other way to escape turning into her mother. (Having a relationship with the same man wouldn't have helped that problem in any way.)

Lili Taylor did a good job and she was beautiful in the sense that she was touching, but she was not Hollywood beautiful. She was not Michelle Pfeiffer
or Catherine Zeta-Jones. If she had been, then more people would have gone to see the movie.

In no way did Arizona Dream have a bad ending! Although I agree it was very sad.

Grace had to kill herself OR destroy the house - which I think both Grace AND Axel knew wasn't going to happen. That's why he didn't seem so 'surprised' at her suicide.

Did anyone else notice how the atmosphere and character's personalities seemed to change towards the end of the film? Grace started to be nice to Elaine, Elaine had become more eccentric and complacent, and the connection between all of the characters seemd less, I don't know, spiritual?!

I agree that she felt she had to escape turning into her mother (a mission she even foreshadows when Axel first meets her by saying 'I'm going to kill myself before it happens...'), and I also think she was quite a free-spirited existentialist character - could you really see her living happily ever after with Axel? I think it was more of a personal, but not selfish, thing to do. I agree that it's very sad, but I think that's the price Grace had to pay for being honest with herself, and because of that she's a character I really respect.

Axel loved her? yeah, but for how long? He was young and inmature,he jumped from Elaine to Grace in a short time, and probably,he would get tired of Grace too,and that would become Grace in a more miserable person than she was...Axel was not the solution to Grace. He felt something strong for Elaine, and changed his feelings in a short time. Why wouldn't he do the same thing with Grace?.
She did not trust the idea of Axel of them together, and she was right. They would have had a brief affair, but Grace would go on feeling depressed and lost. Axel was very childish and was not ready to live with a person so complicated and f-ucked up as Grace.Having to handle her constant mood swings and weird things,if she had acted like a drama queen, he would have beaten her,(as he did with Elaine when she did drama),and Grace would have killed him.Definitely both were not made for each other and Grace knew it, that is why Axel being "in love with her" did not stop her from suicide, she knew that was not love.

She constantly says that, both of them are negative, and how that never works. He seemed cool and supportive, but you could see she did not believe him and ignored his conversation about twin souls and such...Also,he had been sleeping with her mom,and Grace hated that.I don't think she would feel comfortable with Axel after that or at least enough comfortable as to settle down with him. What would her mom say? other problem..

She was insane, mentally.Depression or whatever, but she was not happy because she lived a weird style of life, and that had a negative effect on her.
Grace decided to kill herself, because believed strongly in the idea of she living in a turtle's body, and at the end being happy,as turtles are.She was determined to committ suicide, because for her, that was the road to the happiness she was unable to find being alive.

That was a very sad but beautiful description, Ada.

Did anyone else notice the lightning that hit the tree a millisecond before Grace shot herself. To me it seems the filmmakers wanted to leave an impression as if the lighting had shocked Grace and made her pull the trigger almost accidentally. As if there were something greater out there that wanted Grace dead for some reason.

reply

I actually had thought she was struck by lightning, and even when I played the scene several times I wasn't so sure. It was an oddly beautiful but also horrifying scene, and Lili Taylor was the strongest point of this film in my opinion.

As for why she had to kill herself, it was inevitable after the earlier scenes when she threatned suicide. When people threaten to commit suicide, it's important to take them seriously — even if they're fictional characters in films.

reply

yes ,she had because ,she was unhappy in the world, she was mostly unhappy in her life, the moment she found true happiness and love ,she killed herself so in that way there would not be any chance to see things falling a part.

she watched how her mother's life sucked, how Axel lost the love for her mother, she couldn't let it to happen to herself

she killed herself while she was happy,so she could live forever happy
