Too much

A motorcycle vaults over a wall and drops thirty or forty feet. The rider, who survives relatively unhurt (after that fall?), is a beautiful, mysterious young woman. The person who finds her is a handsome, but deeply troubled, young man. The young woman's significant other is a more than troubled young man who is, apparently, chasing her all over Spain. All I can say is that the beautiful young woman is fun to watch. The rest of it left me cold.

I really really thought it was hysterically funny at times, the early 90ies esthetique just had me on the floor laughing. But I also thoght it was nice and poetic in itself. Hm, so we disagree.

It`s called direct action
and it comes to us highly recommended

Love this film. It's funny, sexy, scary and intellectually engaging, though it also frustrates me as does all Medem's work!

What I find both enjoyable and frustrating is the way we are encouraged to look for meaning yet there are ultimately no answers (asi es la vida!). This is even more true of his later work.

PS I'm not saying it's meaningless / style without substance etc. no no no! Just that it is open to interpretation and encourages the viewer to use their imagination.

I agree.

Awesome movie. I'm looking forward to watching some other Medem movies, as I have only seen La Ardilla Roja (1993) and LucĂa y el Sexo (2001) and loved them.

reply

yea brilliant film ...
Emma Suarez is fantastic.
Anyone who enjoys this film should also see "Sex and Lucia", also by Medem.

I don't think anyone who dislikes The Red Squirrel is a moron, but I certainly disagree with them whole-heartedly. I think this is a wonderful film, admittedly not for all tastes, but then neither is You've Got Mail. I loved it.

reply

Gotta be honest, I was totally underwhelmed by Sex and Lucia, but I love this film and pretty much all other Medem work up until S&L.

reply

This is one of those films where people who like it are so passionate about it they look at you like a moron for not liking, or getting it. I agree that there was just too much going on in the plot, there were parts of it that were really good, but as a whole it was not that good to me.

reply

I agree there is too much going on and too much is left to your own intepretation. I like clear cut films because if you are left to figure out everything then whats the use of the director. this movie, nevermind all the praise, has so many things going on that by the end you are confused and bored. watch it but not higly recommended. Sex and Lucia is way better.

reply

"because if you are left to figure out everything then whats the use of the director"

Wow. There's dim, and then there's you. Do you really need leading by the hand and somebody explaining everything to you?

reply

Yes, because I don't want to waste my time in trying to figure out what the director wanted, what his intention was, or how he wants this to be interpreted, etc, etc.
By the way, how would you feel if a novel writer completely leaves out major parts of the story or ends the story midway, leaving you to figure out the rest of the story? I am sure you won't like that.

reply

Oranges and apples. But it should be simple, even for you, to see that the shortcoming here is yours, not the director's. I thought the film was easy to follow, but if you really found it that difficult then obviously this kind of film is not for you.

reply

I don't think it was meant as a documentary (unless a documentary on squirrels, in which case it was).

I know you are, you said you are, but what am I?

reply

As someone who has been in multiple motorcycle accidents, including one where I hit a parked car at a decent speed, and another where I was rear ended at a stop light and thrown 10 feet in the air, landed on asphalt, and slid another 20 feet into an intersection, I can safely say that it is possible she would be fine other than dazed and sore. The reason why you can survive motorcycle accidents sometimes is the fact that there is no car around you to cause injury. When you are in a car you hit your head, the car gets crushed, you are trapped. On a motorcycle, in a good accident, you go flying, you land, and that's your injury, nothing else. If your body relaxes when you crash, which it does for some people, you land and slide, and that is when you either get hurt, or not.

I took it more like a fairy-tale a very weird one but no need to take the laws of physics into account :)
