I remember reading the book before I realised it was a movie and the book it was a video game that was driven by a genetic blob at the centre of the machine. Some new kind of life form trying to communicate.
And the book was totally different because the game had teens pairing off to mate.

Well I'm not sure if it's the same book I read but it was called Arcade and had these strange video games getting hold of the teenagers in a small town in the USA and changing their behaviour..
They pull one of the machines apart to find that it was analysing the people using it via the controls and inside the machine was this living cube made up of some genetic goop that was running the whole show.
Weird because the book ends with the "aliens" or whatever they are making contact via the games.
This movie was not based on a book. It was based on an original idea by producer Charles Band.
