Hi there! This is actually the dvd author for the AS CC DVD. I basically design all the menus and compile the different assets for the dvd. Do some additional editing and encoding on them. I am so excited to find a community of people who are as excited about this movie as we over here at Criterion are. I can tell you that the "Making Of" is one of the most comprehensive "Making Of" documentaries ever conceived for DVD (rivaling only the Lord of the Rings SE). I can't talk about it too much (confidentiality agreement)-- but post any questions and I'll try to answer them as best as I'm able to.

I would love to be able to post a screenshot of the poster art, but unfortunately it is currently under wraps. It is not an amalgamation of any previous posters/box covers, but rather is an original interpretation of these done by the polish artist Pawel Althamer (http://www.culture.pl/en/culture/artykuly/os_althamer_pawel). It's beautiful, striking, and will for sure please all of the AS fans out there. There has been talk of selling a limited quantity of poster-size silkscreen prints of this artwork, but we're unsure if the demand is high for this. Would anyone be interested in this?

OMG!!!! OMG!!!! OMG!!!!
Would anyone be interested in a poster-sized silkscreen print of the artwork from the Criterion release of AS???

OMG!!!! OMG!!!! OMG!!!!

Somebody pinch me.

By the way, has anyone heard from my brother? He works at a video store and he never came home yesterday.

Thanks Valerie. I guess that makes the demand for it at approximately 1. We'll need to see that there are at least 800-1000 people who would be interested in it in order to make it a reality. The last time we tried something like this was for our re-issue of Rene Clair's "Under The Roofs of Paris" and we had an initial run of 2500 absolutely beautiful 1-sheets. They're stunning (I have one hanging in my home office), but from what I heard they still have over 1800 still just sitting in stock collecting dust.

Anyone else out there? Additionally, they haven't completely decided on whether it should be a 2 or 3 disc set. It's looking like it might just be 2. You all seem to be the most "hardcore" of fans out there-- is there anything out there that you would really kill for to see appear in this release?

reply

Additionally, sorry if this is disappointing, but I don't think that release date is confirmed. We actually hadn't made the official announcement yet-- I have no idea how you picked up on it. We'll be very lucky if it is ready by then, but we're looking more at 4th quarter '08 (maybe even 1st quarter '09).

reply

it's only gonna cost a dollar? i'm confused!

reply

I believe the retail price is going to be $29.95 (though if you buy it straight from us, I think it's something like $23 or $24).

reply

i do not agree with you. "agree to disagree" as they say.

How about a fan commentary track? You could contact the most knowledgeable and articulate fans on this message board (we know who we are) and you could fly us out to Hollywood and we could all relate how AS has changed our lives, shout out our favourite lines as they appear, debate the finer points of living in the Another Stakeoutiverse or, even better, take on specific roles and recite all the dialogue in sync with the characters. Dibs on Brian O'Hara

reply

I've heard, and keep in mind that this is just a rumour, that Touchstone and Microsoft were putting so much money into a very special HD DVD edition of Another Stakeout that they actually doomed the machine to failure, because this single DVD's production costs were so high that even if they sold a trillion HD DVD machines, they still wouldn't have been anywhere close to breaking even. It was a tragic end to a format with so much promise, but hey, sometimes if you tango with AS 2 you might not live to tell about it.

reply

That makes sense, because wasn't AS originally released around the same time as the Sony MiniDisc? And look what happened to that.

Long story short, want to buy a Sony MiniDisc player?

reply

I see. Sort of a RHPS, but with AS. That could work.

On cue, we could throw bath mitts when Gina says,"Cover me! I'm taking a bath!"

That sort of thing?

reply

You guys are great! That HD DVD was definitely a rumor. We'd definitely know about it. A fan commentary track would be a great idea though- are any of you based in NYC? That's where we could record it (though I wonder if we did some sort of conference call on skype, if we could record that?).

Additionally, we're trying to get the rights to Quadrophenia to have a synched up track with that, though it may prove to be too expensive. I'm assuming you've all watched AS with the sound off, and playing The Who's Quadrophenia at the same time? For any rookies out there-- you press play right when the lightning bolt hits the touchstone blue circle.

reply

Oh crap! It's Quadrophenia? I thought it was Frampton Comes Alive! No wonder it never made sense (not that AS doesn't improve any album).

reply

I thought of another audience participation cue for AS: When Brian O'Hara eats the ice cream really fast, and gets "brain freeze", we can do that too!

I'm thinking we can do something with duct tape too, but I'm not sure what yet.

I have always depended on the kindness of strangers...

reply

These are all great, but I'm not sure how I'm going to actually put "audience participation" on the actual dvd. MGM did an interesting thing when they released the special edition of Showgirls, and had a pamphlet describing the various drinking games that people play while watching the film (I think they even included a commemorative shotglass or something). I don't know if people will quite understand these types of things. I mean, it's Another Stakeout, not Rocky Horror...

reply

You've just given me a great idea! "Another Rocky Horror Picture Show" starring Richard Dreyfus, Emilio Estevez and Rosie O'Donnell as the Ingenue.

Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.

That might be going a bit too far...

Bad news guys. The Criterion dvd has been put "on hold" indefinitely. The higherups here admit that as worthwhile a film as this might be, there really just isn't a strong enough market for the film. Aside from the four or five regulars on this board, and the 5 or 6 thousand people on the japanese Another Stakeout webring, their estimates for how many we'd sell were unfortunately absolutely and completely dismal.

Despite my begging and pleading, this cinematic treasure will be stuck in bargain bins across middle america, tethered to it's inferior predecessor within that 2-pack extreme edition.

I want to let you know how devoted I am to this film, and I put in my two weeks notice today. Pretty much have to finish out work on the criterion White Water Summer dvd, and that's it for me. Criterion was a great place to work, but clearly they aren't as passionate about true cinema as I would have hoped. If anyone on here is in need of a dvd author who is also a keen project manager, please keep me in mind. I'm moving to Chatsworth temporarily to do some dvd authoring work for my uncle, but there's only so much of that I can take. The last time I worked for him, after 4 months of looking at his "adult movies" all day long, I was so desensitized I'd have to log on to the web and watch at least three babies get killed before I could get it on with my wife. Or rather, my ex-wife (RIP Donna).

And of course you never know, if the winds of change blow this way, who is to say that Another Stakeout might somehow catch on in some sort of weird and partially ironic subculture and actually merit Criterion to step it up and deliver the dvd experience that we true fans deserve. But alas, that day doesn't appear to be anytime soon.

reply

Criterion just issued an email saying it is going to issue Blu-ray DVDs of its titles! We can't stop now.
