Reeve's foreign language

In several scenes, the Reeve seems to be speaking in another language. By his tone, It usually sounds like he may be swearing. One of his favorite phrases seems to be "Ivangelina" Although that may just be the name of his horse.

Anybody know what language he's using, or why?

I don't have this movie right in front of me & I'm sure you've already thought of this, but I can't help but ask: have you ruled out Latin??

reply

Nope, I haven't ruled out anything. My language recognition skills are pretty bad.

I thought maybe since the actor was from Belgium, I thought maybe he was speaking Belgian, although I can't imagine why he would do that in the movie.

More historically accurate would be him speaking latin or French, but when he does this, he's usually talking to peasants, who are presuably not educated in foreign langages.

There's no such language as Belgian. In Belgium they speak either Flemish or French. I haven't seen this film yet - so does Gene speak any English in it. I loved him in the Vanishing. Most people from that area are multilingual. If he does speak english is he completely fluent?

Thanks for the tip... So maybe he's speaking french, Flemish, or Latin... I guess we won't know until we find someone that speaks english, and at least one of these languages fluently, AND has seen the movie.

He spoke a lot of english quite well, and with no noticeable accent. It's an excellent performance, although his motivations are a little confusing. I discussed that with Helen_of_troy_19 in the "Pagan Rituals" thread.

This other language he uses is generally reserved for times when it seems like he's very emotional. A little bothersome since I don't know what it means, but not nearly as annoying as the usual stream of swear words. I thought maybe if I could figure out what he was saying, his character might make a little more sense.

Thanks, I was just curious on how good his english was.

Have you seen the Vanishing - I would recommended it because Gene gives a brilliant performance. It's a fantastic film. It's original title is Spoorloos.

Oh do you know how his last name is pronounced. It's been confusing me for a little while.

Sorry, to be honest, I know nothing about him, except what I got from his IMDB page, and to the best of my knowledge, I haven't seen any of his other movies. He's a pretty good actor, but I don't tend to pick movies for the actors... Although I may make an exception in his case.

SPOILERS

Check out the part where he's saying Christine should hang... Not to be mean, but man, those eyebrows of his are a hoot!

Gene Bervoets is pronounced 'Jen Bervoots' with a soft 'J'. Gene is short for 'Eugene' and appears regularly on Belgian TV.

It's Latin.

reply

Latin? Why would he curse in latin? and what's he saying? I took latin, and can't recognize anything he says...

The bishop on the other hand, is definitely latin, as a bishop would... but I'm talking about the reeve.

reply

could be medieval latin? there's more than one kind o' latin, ya know.

reply

I haven't seen this movie since it was released but I recall him being depicted as being from lower part of the Norman aristocracy so (medieval) French would've been his first language.
