Didnt realize this, BUT

they all must have had the worst breath...not brushing for weeks and weeks and eating human flesh

They had toothpaste. They actually rationed toothpaste out as a desert - it says so in the book.

Canessa eats some in the movie, too.

I heard that's bad for you though.

It wasn't the main problem they experienced...

Plus I really don't think that eating raw frozen human flesh is going to affect your breathe one way or the other.

And they had plenty of now around.

With noting but time on your hands, I think you could keep your teeth pretty clean as long as you had access to snow/water...even without a toothbrush.

Actually, it will. Prolonged periods of low/no carbohydrate intake -- which is the situation the crash survivors were in once the chocolate and wine were gone -- put the body in a state of ketosis (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis), which has a number of common side effects. Foul breath and body odor are among the most common.

reply

Let's not forget that nearly all of them smoked constantly (according to the book and shown in the movie), so that must have affected their breath too.

The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.

reply

Yeah because bad breath is SO the worst when you're on the verge of death for months.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over here, looking through your stuff

They didn't eat a lot of processed sugars so they probably didn't get much tooth decay.

They hadn't showered during their entire ordeal, so their body (not just breath) must have smelled horrible. I can't imagine that they cleaned themselves with the snow (too cold), and even then, there was no soap.

May shock you to learn this, but that's how the majority of humanity lived for the first two hundred thousand years of their existence. May further shock you to learn that that's how a good chunk of humanity lives TODAY!! Human beings are animals. Cleanliness is not the highest priority for a lot of people living today.

That being said, I'm sure you are correct. Their breath and body oder was probably quite awful. But they surely grew accustomed to it after some months. The troops and guards at Andersonville would have had it FAR worse. But testimony from both prisoners and guards indicate that the stench became tolerable after a time. Human beings are far more adaptable than you give them credit for. Study the world some and you'll realize what depravity human beings can 'get used to'.

If the guards and administrators at Auschwitz can get used to seeing a couple thousand innocent people a day get gassed and burned in ovens, there are few limits to the adaptability of mankind.

So eating human meat makes your breath worse than eating, say, chicken meat? I did not know that.

I cannot imagine how badly that fuselage must have stunk. The cold probably took the edge off of it and I'm sure they were all kind of used to it, but it had to be really foul.

I worked med-surg nursing and have smelled old pee, various kinds of poop, the stench of various infections and the horrific, foul assault of homeless people who haven't bathed in a long time, but wore the same clothes and repeatedly urinated in them. The homeless stinkies were the worst. Even with a mask and Vicks Vapo Rub spread all over the inside, I'd still gag and cough. (I tried not to gag/cough and made as little a deal of it as possible, but I couldn't help it.)

The kids in the plane had ALL of that in the fuselage - infections, old urine, BO (possibly poop at some point) and they had it coming from a whole bunch of people.

It had to be really disgusting.

But it was also the least of their problems...and, again, it came on slowly and though they may have noticed a smell, it probably didn't make them vomit or anything because they were used to it.

I remember reading that the rescuers found it really ripe.

Had to be stinky, for sure! They all seem to be cleaned up now, though. :)
