Why did Ethan Hawke refuse to grow a beard?

He insisted on keeping the goatee? Seems odd. If you're playing a character that doesn't shave for 70 days, you grow a beard. You're an actor. Period.

Compelling.Brilliant.Beautifully acted. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114436/

I highly doubt he is capable of growing a full beard. I've never seen him with more than puny scruff and goatees and even those are weak. He is a puss who probably can't grow one.

Oops, I just read that he did in fact refuse. He is such a huge raging p*ssy that I just assumed he couldn't grow one. In fact I'll bet he can't and his refusal was a cover. :P

Seriously he refused?? What kind of crap is that? If you're going to make a movie with a story of this magnitude at least try to play the part. It's not like they were asking him to lose 40 pounds. It was a beard! Christian Bale shows way more devotion for a role than Hawke ever could.

He was probably embarressed he can't grow one so refused. If i was in charge i would have fired him for refusing to grow a beard.

Kinda made me lose some respect for him as an Actor...That's not taking his craft very seriously, and not shaving isn't even that big of a sacrafice.

The fact that this is a true story makes it even worse...

Sometimes having the right look is all you need for a casting call. I don't blame him one bit for keeping his appearance on screen, if that means landing a future gig or not.

He can't grow a full beard. It's patchy with bald spots etc.

Remember these guys are around 18 to early 20s. At that age I couldn't grow a beard even if I didn't shave for 70 days. Look at actual photos from the event. They didn't all have beards.
