She offered to let him back out of the engagement, which few women of her era would have done, but he insisted on getting married, and doing everything in his power to produce legitimate offspring. If he succeeded, and he did, then he damn well needed to live up to the responsibilities he had taken on of his own free will. If he didn't like the mess he'd created, too bad.
