Why did we hate Robert Patrick, other than "He's not Duchovny"? The guy's GREAT.

I didn't want the T-1000 to replace Mulder. Not one bit. So season 8 sucked, the new guy sucked... everything sucked and I was never going to give any of it a chance.

I recently watched the last two seasons with an open mind, and while the show's overall quality was slipping, Patrick was SUPERB. The guy has screen presence for miles and absolutely nailed the hard-but-tender Doggett. Patrick's work in the scene where he begs "Audrey Pauley" to help save Reyes, is IMO the most moving piece of acting in the entire X-Files canon. Not far behind is in "Underneath", when he's balancing disgust and affection for his old, corrupt NYPD partner. "You sonofabitch, this is a FELONY!" deserves meme status, and the crack in his voice when he has to reign himself in as Scully appears... some high-end acting right there.

So, were there any valid reasons why the addition of this accomplished, well-respected character actor was such an awful thing back in 2000? I reckon quite a few of us missed out on some damn good work.

I didn't hate him, I thought he was an awesome addition! :) You know how people are there, many of them can't accept change. But I think it all worked out well in the end.

honestly I was cool with Patrick himself.. but hated the idea of renewing The X-Files after the romantic ending to Season 7

Mulder abducted by aliens RIGHT AFTER it was proved to be all a hoax!!
the series going full circle with Billy miles and the pilot episode - so awesome

for me Season 07 was the end :)

I felt the same way, I mean I enjoyed Robert and the additional episodes but I felt the real ending was season 7 as well :)

Oh lots of people did. I remember the old Yahoo Clubs back then. I had just gotten on the internet and joined up to one XF group and there were many who said they'd kill him if they saw him. One girl actually said she'd stab him to death. I was just shocked. I loved Doggett and loved what both he and Annabeth Gish brought to the show.

I think if he had been introduced earlier in the series, it might have turned out different. He was basically a pinch hitter, and the showrunners had too little time to develop him as a character as well as his back story.

Also, the main storyline had been concluded IIRC and they started down the path of 'super-soldiers' which held less interest for long-time viewers I think.

They might have been better to set Doggett and Reyes in a separate series set within the same universe a al the many CSI incarnations.
