how can weird stuff happen to them every week?

Its ridiculous the amount of aliens, monsters, time travel, ghosts, AI etc .. something that would be a life altering spine chilling once in a lifetime experience that would probably frighten you into having a heart attack ....every week! Its ludicrous! The pair of them would be basketcases by the end of the first year. Look at various SF movies Alien, Terminator, Predator, Thing, Matrix, Close Encounters, ET etc ...the central characters only deal with one mind blowing event in their lives which they lucky to live through and it goes on to define their lives and thats it (until sequels of course but even those are kind of understandable and flow naturally) .. Mulder and Scully are dealing with Aliens, Terminators, time travel, Things, matrixs, Androids, vampires, werewolves etc on a seemingly daily basis!! Its just ridiculous!

XFiles would've worked better had they finished the series when they did the movie in 98 (which was actually quite a decent SF conspiracy thriller movie like Silence of the Lambs meets All the Presidents Men meets Close Encounters meets Alien/The Thing) then just done a film every few years like star trek or better still just done a movie series from the outset (but then that wasn't feasible as it had to be a tv series)

I mean Star Trek can get away with it as its the far future they on faster than light starships travelling planet to planet encountering weird shit every week..it could happen it probably will in 300 years or so when you think about the changes of the past 100-200 years and the rate things are now changing/new inventions (although in reality it'd probably be closer to the Alien series ) also something like The Invaders could get away with it as it was just one thing a behind the scenes alien invasion. maybe if XF stuck to the central alien invasion conspiracy but then they go off and do other monsters/AI/timetravel/ghosts etc of the week stuff to fill in lol

It is almost as if they were in a tv series

The answer is simple: It's their JOB as well-funded FBI agents to investigate cases that are strange and unexplained. Thus they regularly travel almost anywhere at a moments notice (with no cost to them) to probe weird phenomena. How often do normal people get the opportunity to do this? rarely, if ever.

reply

and every strange unexplained thing is either aliens, monsters, AI, etc etc literally every single time

reply

But, like I said, that's what they're paid to investigate -- strange stuff that's out of the norm. It's what they specialize in. These weird things aren't all happening in the same place or at the same time. They get the case and travel to the scene in question to check it out.

Of course everything's exaggerated because TV shows and movies are usually exaggerations of real life with the boring parts taken out. Otherwise people wouldn't care to watch. That said, The X-Files is decidedly subdued compared to, say, Kolchak: The Night Stalker.

reply

Exactly! It is their JOB!

reply

Well, if it didn't this show would be pointless.

true of course. its just something that been bugging me for years about XF and the way it went on and on and on even after the movie and even when Ducovny got sick of it and wanted out.. (no doubt realising how silly it all was getting) then they got T1000 and then eventually Anderson couldn't take it anymore and left and it STILL went on and on (and now they finally bring it back cuz everything is coming back Star Trek/Wars, Alien, Predator, Terminator, Blade Runner literally everything is back now with the original actors almost)

anyway I just caught an ep of the new series the other night (starts with M&S in sushi bar then AI takes over) and it just struck me how ridiculous it all is. just the other week it was about the grand alien conspiracy with the smoking man doing a darth vader/empire style revelation at the end. then this is like the filler ep of M&S defeating AI on a random night out at dinner. i dunno its just... stupid. its like Die Hard how can weird shit be happening to these guys all the time even when they just chillin (although Die Hard make more sense as it just 5 times)

Well, I have always thought the Alien Mythology was THE best of any of the episodes. They always had me chilled to the bone. Last season touched on it nicely. In fact, the previous season wasn't too bad. This season everything seems trite.

The "monster of the week" isn't cutting it for me.
